My Dearest Child, I wish it were possible for me to be there with you; becoming your father meant everything to me. But this is not going to happen. Your mother does promise that you will get this letter when she feels you are old enough to read and understand it. I don't have the words to express how much I will miss not being a part of your life. I know with your mother's guiding hand, you will grow into the adult any parent will be proud of. I am taking the only way I know how at this time to try and give you some explanation. If you ever get in a jam or your back is against the wall, and I don't know if this will help or hurt, but if you ever do, look for Jenny. She might have the answer. I love you.Dad

  • - Oregon's First Pioneer
    av Jerry Sutherland
    157

When Calvin Tibbets ventured to Oregon Country in 1832 it was looking more British than American. That's because Hudson's Bay Company, the Crown's proxy, had virtual control of the area and some of their French Canadian employees had retired to farms along the Willamette River. The only Americans there before Tibbets were explorers, fur trappers, scientists, and sailors. His goal was different: to settle Oregon with Americans and make it part of the United States.Tibbets got along with his Canadian neighbors and native tribes long enough to assist fellow American settlers when they arrived: first missionaries, then retiring mountain men, and finally wagon train pioneers who crossed the Oregon Trail in such great numbers that the British finally gave up their claims to Oregon in 1846. Unfortunately, Tibbets died soon after achieving his goal, and all that he had done to achieve it soon faded into the shadows of Oregon history. In making the case for Calvin Tibbets being considered Oregon's first pioneer, this book shines a bright light back on him. New details gleaned from original sources are integrated with previously published, but scattered, accounts of Tibbets' many adventures. Readers will likely learn things they didn't know about John McLoughlin, Jason Lee, Ewing Young, Bethenia Owens-Adair, Elbridge Trask, Joe Meek, Solomon and Celiast Smith, and others who played important roles in early Oregon.

Wisconsin has its share of ghost towns. Villages grew from trading posts, lumber camps, and mining sites. Some didn't survive the catastrophes that befell them, but they all surely experienced grand moments when anticipation of greatness loomed and prosperity seemed well within grasp. And many, before they passed from existence, wrote some colorful pages in Wisconsin history. Twenty-nine of these villages once again come to life on the pages of GHOSTVILLE.NEW... REVISED EDITION... includes the history of the Wisconsin Indian tribes, Wisconsin lumber industry, and much, much more!

A little-known story of mutiny and murder illustrating the centrality of smuggling and slavery in early American societyOn the night of June 1, 1743, terror struck the schooner Rising Sun. After completing a routine smuggling voyage where the crew sold enslaved Africans in exchange for chocolate, sugar, and coffee in the Dutch colony of Suriname, the ship traveled eastward along the South American coast. Believing there was an opportunity to steal the lucrative cargo and make a new life for themselves, three sailors snuck below deck, murdered four people, and seized control of the vessel.Mutiny on the Rising Sun recounts the origins, events, and eventual fate of the Rising Sun¿s final smuggling voyage in vivid detail. Starting from that horrible night in June 1743, it narrates a deeply human history of smuggling, providing an incredible story of those caught in the webs spun by illicit commerce. The case generated a rich documentary record that illuminates an international chocolate smuggling ring, the lives of the crew and mutineers, and the harrowing experience of the enslaved people trafficked by the Rising Sun. Smuggling stood at the center of the lives of everyone involved with the business of the schooner. Larger forces, such as imperial trade restrictions, created the conditions for smuggling, but individual actors, often driven by raw ambition and with little regard for the consequences of their actions, designed, refined, and perpetuated this illicit commerce. At once startling and captivating, Mutiny on the Rising Sun shows how illegal trade created demand for exotic products like chocolate, and how slavery and smuggling were integral to the development of American capitalism.

Coming of age during the British Invasion of the early 1960s, Ron West was inspired to pursue a career in music. His interest in bands like the Beatles influenced the formation of the Chesmann and Chesmann Square-popular Kansas City area bands that survived for a decade and included his two younger brothers, Steve and Gary. Then, in 1977, West formed a new band, Missouri, which through the help of well-known concert promoter Chris Fritz, went on to record two studio albums and earned him accolades in the music industry. In record bins at music stores throughout Missouri and surrounding states, music aficionados still come upon a unique Missouri album that resonates with the dreams of several Kansas City area musicians. Their first album, printed in monochrome, features the Gateway Arch from St. Louis standing amongst the desolation of a southwestern desert vista, representing the creative vision of Ron West. His legacy now carries forth through a new iteration of Missouri comprised of original and new members continuing to perform these classic songs. Movin' On is the story of Ron West, highlighting his beginnings in a working-class family in south Kansas City to paying his dues as a musician who aspired to cross the threshold to rock and roll stardom.

This collection of articles weaves extracts from over 30 years of local history research by distinguished historian Dr. Douglas H. Shepard into a single volume, offering a detailed and engaging narrative of Fredonia's development from prehistory to the preservation efforts of the 1990s. Topics range from the physical geography that defines Chautauqua county and places Fredonia in the Lake Erie grape belt, to the many national 'firsts' which occurred in Fredonia: the first march of the Women's Christian Temperance Union in 1873, the first Grange established by the Patrons of Husbandry in 1867, and the first commercial natural gas well established in 1825.
