Updated and expanded in 2016, this is the second edition to Flash Floods & Falls: Deaths & Rescues in Zion National Park. This book includes new heartbreaking stories, such as the seven canyoneers in 2015 who all died in a flash flood in Keyhole Canyon, two separate BASE jumping deaths, rock climbing, and flash flood deaths in the Narrows.Zion National Park is home to majestic and wondrous canyons, cliffs, crags, mesas, rivers, and slot canyons. World travelers remain in awe as they drive, walk, hike, and climb into such a unique place that is filled with vibrant, sacred, and mystical energy. Gradually becoming transfixed, many push themselves further into the wilds, oblivious to weather and dangers, deeper into the backcountry, suddenly finding themselves in extreme predicaments. These are the moments when accidents often occur. . .and these once beautiful, holy places become menacing and dangerous--sometimes leading to agonizing and horrific accidents--and even death! Since the early 1900s there have been 87 accidental deaths that have taken place inside Zion's park boundaries. Hundreds of rescues of outdoor enthusiasts have ensued as well. This book covers all of those deaths, and many of the gripping rescues that have occurred during the past century. Bo Beck, a senior Zion Search and Rescue member for nearly 20 years, also shares his personal accounts. You will marvel at the riveting stories, and take away a better understanding of how to be smarter and better prepared for your next great adventure!

This book provides the reader access to more than 20,000 death records, and is the result of six years of work by volunteers of the South King County Genealogical Society. Information contained in this book has been extracted from microfilmed records of the Seattle-King County (Washington) Health Department, and are not confined to deaths which occurred in Seattle but also include many deaths in outlying areas of King County. These extractions are alphabetically arranged by surname of the deceased, and list: set, reel, page and record number; full name of the deceased, date of death, age, sex, place of birth, and place of death. At the beginning of the book is a list of dozens of towns and a number of hospitals mentioned in the records, explaining their locations and other facts about them.

  • av Jeremy Paul Wright

-THE FIRST BOOK TO EXPLORE THE HISTORY OF FLEMING-NEON, KENTUCKY!!!-Discover the mysterious history of a small town with lots of secrets. -Never before published pictures, interviews, sports records, and historical facts. -Jeremy's interest in the history of the town started when he was in high school at Fleming-Neon. It was announced that a new school was to be built and the 3 high schools in Letcher County would be consolidated. This meant that Jeremy was in the last class to graduate from Fleming-Neon High School and it instilled an interest in those that had come before him. The first step was to compile all the high school football team's scores. That information was available for a number of years on a website that no longer exists. -Next he became interested in the history of the town itself. One burning question continually comes up time and time again: How did this town get its name? Neon is an odd name for a town. A local legend is told by nearly everyone to be the truth to answer this question, but evidence to the contrary was found that could shed some light on the dangers of relying only on oral history. Neon was established during the early 1900s while a coal boom was sweeping the entire region. -Was there ever a place called Chip before it became Neon? Another question that many locals had wondered about. This book will offer proof that Neon was once called Chip through maps, interviews, and postal records. -It didn't take long to realize that the history of Neon was not well preserved. I have been on a mission to be the one to preserve it. I have spent countless hours examining all I could in old newspapers, postal records, books, local advertisements, and eye witness interviews. I feel that I have the most accurate account of the history of this town, the establishment, and the high school and several of the athletic teams. The research is not complete but it is my hope that by publishing what I do know at this point that I can motivate others to join in on the search for the facts about our local history. I hope you enjoy learning about Fleming-Neon!

  • - Collected Works on Arizona Gambling Violence
    av Erik J Wright
    201

From the foreword by Tombstone historian Peter Brand: "This book represents his [author's] first collection of articles, dealing with frontier gamblers, murder, jail breaks and rough justice. Primarily dealing with the lives of four Tucson gamblers and a gang of cut-throat opportunists, these articles provide previously unknown information about some of these lesser known nefarious characters. During the early 1880s, many men, who devoted their time to the high-risk vocations of mining and gambling, found their way to Tucson, Arizona Territory. The author provides biographical sketches of four such men - John Murphy, William Moyer, David Gibson and their murdered victim, gunman James Leavy."

Along with a comprehensive listing of the island's botanical species, A Flora of San Nicolas Island California presents a fascinating illustrated history of the sheep ranching era from the 1800s to the present and explains how that history has shaped the botanical landscape. San Nicolas Island is the most remote of the islands off the coast of southern California. It is an island of contrasts, where an active military base is surrounded by the ever-changing ocean and beaches teeming with marine mammals. A number of unique plants and animals are found here, including a diminutive island fox. The island receives little rainfall-just over 8 inches a year on average-so the landscape changes dramatically with the seasons.
