The goal of Christianity is that all of us become spiritualized, even divinized by our spiritual efforts through the blessings of the Holy Spirit. In particular, Christianity is centered around the ideal of Christian perfection that leads to theosis, which is also called glorification, deification, divinization, or sanctification. Theosis means to finally achieve a perfect union with God through the grace of His energies where the veil thereby becomes rent between earthly and heavenly matters. Those who attain theosis attain a saintly bearing while alive, and become holy lights unto the world who demonstrate impeccable Christian living with divine qualities. They become Homo Deus, the twice born of the spirit that Jesus spoke of with Nicodemus. It is as if they have transcended the world while in it.Thomas Aquinas wrote, "The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that he, made man, might make men gods." Saint Irenaeus said, "the Word became man, and the Son of God became the Son of man so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God." While Psalm 82:6 only tells us, "Ye are gods," Clement of Alexander explained for us in detail: "the Word of God became a man so that you might learn from a man how to become a god." This is the goal of theosis.Theosis is very much the purpose of human life, which we can only achieve through the synergy of human efforts to reach God together with the Holy Spirit. That achievement requires continuous work at a process of transformation available to all, but particularly found in Christian monasteries due to their Rules of practice. Over the centuries, many in the monastic life have achieved theosis because their life becomes dedicated to specific routines of prayer, meditation, contemplation, watchfulness and self-review, chanting, worship, internal baptism exercises and lectio divina. These efforts will take us through catharsis (purification or purgation) and theoria (illumination) that are stages of transformation preparing us for theosis (union). We must restore God''s perfect image in ourselves and divinize our human nature to become our highest best self, our perfected self, our sacred self as required by the pathway to theosis. Here are the exercises one must follow, and what one must expect along this spiritual way that embraces the full power of God to bring about a spiritual transformation within us.

  • - True to the Heart
    av Lora O'Brien
    287

Updated and Revised 2nd Edition! Irish Witchcraft from an Irish Witch is a delightful mixture of academia and accessibility; a book that explores Witchcraft in Ireland: how it was, is, and will be. It succeeds where many books have failed - fulfilling the longing for real Irish Witchcraft, while crafting the delicate balance between learning from the past and weaving a modern system based on truth and respect. Lora O''Brien is an Irish Drao├¡ (user of magic) working closely with her heritage and her native land, providing a contemporary guide to genuine practice.Irish Witchcraft from an Irish Witch explores the past:-- Providing an investigation of the Witches'' place in Irish mythology.-- Looking at Witchcraft and magic by examining the customs connected with the Sidhe (the Irish Fairies).-- Examining historical evidence of the Witch trials that swept across the island of Ireland through the ages. And the present and beyond by:-- Working with Irish Gods and Goddesses, landscapes, and energies.-- Examining the wheel of the year, with its festivals, cycles, and seasons of Irish culture.-- Looking at ritual progression through a Witch''s life: magical training, physical growth.-- Providing alternatives to the traditional stages of a child''s life in modern Irish culture. When it was released in 2004, this was the first traditionally published Pagan book ever written by an Irish author. It was the book that this author had sought, for over a decade previously... The 2nd edition of this book continues to do now what it did for so many on first publication - it bridges the gap between ''Celtic'' NeoPagan nonsense, and authentic Irish Pagan Practice.

  • - Contemporary Thought and the Eastern Christian Tradition
    av Rowan (Magdalene College Williams
    281

In many ways, we seem to be living in wintry times at present in the Western world. In this new book, Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury and a noted scholar of Eastern Christianity, introduces us to some aspects and personalities of the Orthodox Christian world, from the desert contemplatives of the fourth century to philosophers, novelists and activists of the modern era, that suggest where we might look for fresh light and warmth. He shows how this rich and diverse world opens up new ways of thinking about spirit and body, prayer and action, worship and social transformation, which go beyond the polarisations we take for granted.Taking in the world of the great spiritual anthology, the Philokalia, and the explorations of Russian thinkers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, discussing the witness of figures like Maria Skobtsova, murdered in a German concentration camp for her defence of Jewish refugees, and the challenging theologies of modern Greek thinkers like John Zizioulas and Christos Yannaras, Rowan Williams opens the door to a 'climate and landscape of our humanity that can indeed be warmed and transfigured'.This is an original and illuminating vision of a Christian world still none too familiar to Western believers and even to students of theology, showing how the deep-rooted themes of Eastern Christian thought can prompt new perspectives on our contemporary crises of imagination and hope.
