Historians Manuel Poggio and Antonio Lorenzo take us on an engaging journey into the heart of La Palma through a carefully curated selection of the most outstanding historical photographs of the island. The images span the one hundred year period between 1850 and 1960 and reveal how La Palma has evolved over the years, not only in terms of its economic and landscape changes, but also its ideological values and even its fashions. The work, techniques and styles of all kinds of photographers are captured in more than 150 photographs, many of which have never been published before. They have been collated from local archives as well as collections in other Canary Islands, Spain, Europe and America. This book is a hugely valuable addition to La Palma's cultural heritage and it also asserts the artistic and cultural legacy of photography as a means of communication and expression in its own right. It contains more than 216 old images and reviews the beginning of Photography in Gran Canaria from the hands of one of the greatest experts.

Accompanying us on this journey is an-depth historical guide that helps us to fully understand the meaning and context of the photographs. Above all, this book opens a window into the past, inviting us to lean through and witness the evolving face of Gran Canaria between 1840 and 1940. By the end of 1969, a young German couple, who made documentaries for television, arrived at the small island of La Graciosa almost by chance. It was before tourism, when there was no electricity or running water. People¡s doors were always open. Daily task and fishing, which required great effort, were share amonst the locals. This is the photographic evidence of the love affair that arose between the couple and an unforgiving, peculiar and unique land, populated b authentic seafaring people. Book of photographs of La Graciosa taken by two German documentary filmmakers between 1968/1974, before the arrival of tourism.

Roger Johnson,Éditeur: The Sherlock Holmes Journal
