  • - The Muslim Brotherhood's Quest for Hegemony
av Daniel (University of Durham Atzori
    800,-

This book explores the activities of the local Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan. It examines how the Brotherhood, working to establish an alternative social, political and moral order through networks of Islamic institutions, made a huge contribution to the transformation of Jordanian society. It reveals, however, that the Brotherhood has also engaged with neo-liberal approaches to the economy, adopting a "hybridisation" of Islamism which is a collection of historically constructed practices, rather than an abstract set of beliefs. The book also illustrates how globalisation is profoundly influencing culture and society in the Arab world, though modified by the adoption of an Islamic framework.

As the economies of East Asia grow ever stronger, their need for energy resources increases, which in turn compels closer relations with the countries of the Middle East. This book examines the developing relations between the countries of East Asia with the countries of the Middle East. It looks at various key bilateral relationships, discusses the impact on the United States¿ hegemony in both regions, considers whether the new relations represent a contribution to, or a threat to, peace and stability, and assesses the implications of the changes for patterns of regional and global international relations systems.

The murderous conflict in Iraq and the humanitarian catastrophe fomented by the 2003 Anglo-American invasion continue to have a huge impact on the country. This book assesses the extent of the continuing damage. It charts the background to the 2003 invasion, providing an overview of recent Iraqi history and Iraqi-US relations. It goes on to consider the numerous reports compiled over recent years by UN agencies and similar bodies which provide a great deal of empirical evidence showing how the catastrophe continues. The book includes lengthy extracts from these reports, which document problems such as food scarcity, forced displacement of people, refugees, the adverse effect on children including on their education, the growth of child labour, the adverse economic impact including adverse distributional and welfare impacts, abuse of women and human rights abuses. The overall picture painted is that the situation in Iraq, brought about by the 2003 war, continues dire.

Whereas most studies of Islamism focus on politics and religious ideology, this book analyses the ways in which Islamism in the Arab world is defined, reflected, transmitted and contested in a variety of creative and other cultural forms. It covers a range of contexts of production and reception, from the early twentieth century to the present, and with reference to cultural production in and/or about Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, the Gulf, Lebanon and Israel/Palestine. The material engaged with is produced in Arabic, English and French and includes fiction, autobiography, feature films, television series, television reportage, the press, rap music and video games. Throughout, the book highlights the multiple forms and contested interpretations of Islamism in the Arab world, exploring trends and tensions in the ways Islamism is represented to (primarily) Arab audiences and complicating simplistic perspectives on this phenomenon. The book considers repeated and idiosyncratic themes, modes of characterisation, motifs, structures of feeling and forms of engagement, in the context of an ongoing struggle for symbolic power in the region.

This book focuses on Islamic family law as interpreted and applied by judges in Europe, Australia and North America. It uses court transcriptions and observations to discuss how the most contentious marriage-related issues - consent and age of spouses, dower, polygamy, and divorce - are adjudicated. The solutions proposed by different legal systems are reviewed , and some broader questions are addressed: how Islamic principles are harmonized with norms based on gender equality, how parties bargain strategically in and out of court, and how Muslim diasporas align their Islamic worldview with a Western normative narrative.

While there are many books on Islamic family law, the literature on its enforcement is scarce. This book focuses on how Islamic family law is interpreted and applied by judges in a range of Muslim countries ΓÇô Sunni and Shi''a, as well as Arab and non-Arab. It thereby aids the understanding of shari''a law in practice in a number of different cultural and political settings. It shows how the existence of differing views of what shari''a is, as well as the presence of a vast body of legal material which judges can refer to, make it possible for courts to interpret Islamic law in creative and innovative ways.

Although there has not been the equivalent in Lebanon of the uprisings seen in other Arab countries, the fragile state has nevertheless been put under increased strain by the events in neighbouring countries. Over one million refugees, equal to one quarter of Lebanon¿s population, have moved in from Syria, Sunni jihadists and Shi¿a Hizbullah have engaged in some fighting, and both the economy and the delicate confessional balance of the country have been threatened. At the same time there has been a rise in Christian nationalism, and friction with Israel concerning maritime boundaries and newly discovered oil and gas in the Mediterranean. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the current situation in Lebanon, and a detailed assessment of the difficulties which Lebanon is currently facing.

The controversy about the veiling of women, particularly pronounced in recent times, and the deeper issues it represents are not new. This book examines the state-sponsored anti-veiling campaigns which took place across wide swathes of the Muslim world in the interwar period. It shows how veiling was officially discouraged and frequently ridiculed as backward, but how the anti-veiling campaigns were flawed, mostly promoted by male dominated authoritarian regimes, which, in politicising the issue, empowered opponents who used veiling as a symbol of resistance. Throughout, the book relates the significance of interwar unveiling campaigns to present day debates.
