This special issue of Symbolism: An International Annual of Critical Aesthetics explores the various functions of metaphor in life writing. Looking at a range of autobiographical subgenres (pathography, disability narratives, memoirs of migration, autofiction) and different kinds of metaphors, the contributions seek to 'map' the possibilities of metaphor for narratively framing an individual life and for constructing notions of selfhood.

Im Jahr 2014 feierte das Institut fur Deutsche Sprache (IDS) sein 50-jahriges Bestehen. Dieses Jubilaum nahm das IDS zum Anlass, seine Jahrestagung thematisch etwas breiter anzulegen und diejenigen Themenfelder, die in der sprachwissenschaftlichen Diskussion der letzten funf Jahrzehnte eine besondere Rolle gespielt haben und zu denen das IDS in besonderer Weise hat beitragen konnen, einer Revision zu unterziehen. Die Beitrage dieses Bandes bieten daher einerseits eine Zusammenschau der aktuellen Fragen der Grammatikforschung und Grammatikografie, der Lexikologie und Lexikografie, des gesprochenen Sprachgebrauchs sowie der Korpustechnologie und der Computerlinguistik. Andererseits geben sie auch Auskunft daruber, wo die Sprachwissenschaft im Moment steht und wo sich zukunftig vielleicht neue Forschungsraume offnen.

Die Zeit um 1900 ist keineswegs nur durch rasante asthetische Innovationen gepragt, sondern auch durch eine groe Verbreitung, Verehrung, Neuinterpretation und produktive Rezeption kanonischer Werke. Herausgeber und Verlag konstituieren den Text, versehen ihn mit Paratexten, statten den Band aus, lassen ihn drucken, bewerben, vertreiben und schaffen so eine neue dingliche Prasentation"e; des Werks. Dieser Prozess soll in seiner Relevanz fur die Herausgeber, Autoren bzw. Autorbilder, Werke, Leser und Verlage einer grozugig verstandenen Jahrhundertwende 1900"e; im deutschsprachigen Bereich erfasst werden.

Das Quellenbuch umfasst alle Autoren der lateinischen Prosa und Dichtung von der romischen Republik bis hin zu den Kirchenschriftstellern der Zeit Konstantins des Groen. Es bietet eine chronologisch geordnete vollstandige Sammlung und Ubersetzung aller Texte uber die Skythen und andere nomadische Volker des eurasischen Steppengurtels sowie einen ausfuhrlichen Index. Zur Orientierung des Lesers sind den Texten biographische Informationen zu den Autoren sowie Angaben zum Kontext der jeweiligen Passage vorangestellt. Die Ubersetzungen sind textnah gehalten, damit die Nachverfolgung des lateinischen Textes auch den gebildeten, jedoch fachfremden Lesern erleichtert wird.

The complex nature of globalization increasingly requires a comparative approach to literature in order to understand how migration and commodity flows impact aesthetic production and expressive practices. This special issue of Symbolism: An International Journal of Critical Aesthetics explores the trans-American dimensions of Latina/o literature in a trans-Atlantic context. Examining the theoretical implications suggested by the comparison of the global North-global South dynamics of material and aesthetic exchange, this volume highlights emergent Latina/o authors, texts, and methodologies of interest in for comparative literary studies. In the essays, literary scholars address questions of the transculturation, translation, and reception of Latina/o literature in the United States and Europe. In the interviews, emergent Latina/o authors speak to the processes of creative writing in a transnational context. This volume suggests how the trans-American dialogues found in contemporary Latina/o literature elucidates trans-Atlantic critical dialogues.

The hypothesis that the Gospel of Mark was heavily influenced by Pauline theology and/or epistles was widespread in the nineteenth century, but fell out of favour for much of the twentieth century. In the last twenty years or so, however, this view has begun to attract renewed support, especially in English language scholarship. The Archive of Thotsutmis, Son of Panouphis presents for the first time one of the largest collections of Demotic ostraca to have been discovered intact by archaeologists in the twentieth century. Rarely have such deposits been found in situ. Excavated by Ambrose Lansing on behalf of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1915-16 at the site of Deir el-Bahari, the integrity and context of this find are critical to the proper understanding of the texts it contained. Through the publication and analysis of this archive of Demotic and Greek texts recorded on ostraca, Muhs, Scalf, and Jay reconstruct the microhistory of Thotsutmis, son of Panouphis, and his family, who worked in Egypt on the west bank of Thebes as priests in the mortuary industry during the early Ptolemaic Period in the third century BC. The forty-two ostraca published in this volume provide a rare opportunity to explore the intersections between an intact ancient archive of private administrative documents and the larger social and legal contexts into which they fit. What the reconstructed microhistory reveals is an ancient family striving to make it among the wealthy and connected social network of Theban choachytes and pastophoroi, while they simultaneously navigated the bureaucratic maze of taxes, fees, receipts, and legal procedures of the Ptolemaic state.
