In the intellectual culture of the 17th and 18th centuries, the competitive comparison of Ancients and Moderns and their respective relations to civilization and barbarism constituted one of the formative discourses. Yet alternative ideas of time and historicity are encountered not only in cultural contexts outside of Europe but also in the largely forgotten professional knowledge of the Old World: Thomism, Peripatetism, moderate forms of criticism, political theory, and legal practice. This book introduces a broad panorama of such intellectual cultures in Central Europe. It situates theological, historical, and philosophical scholarship in its institutional and epistemological environments: the Church, the Holy Roman Empire, and the emerging Habsburg Monarchy. Jewish life in Europe has undergone dramatic changes and transformations within the 20th century and also the last two decades. The phenomenon of the dual position of the Jewish minority in relation to the majority, not entirely unusual for Jewish Diaspora communities, manifested itself most distinctly on the European continent. This unique Jewish experience of the ambiguous position of insider and outsider may provide valuable views on contemporary European reality and identity crisis. The book focuses inter alia on the main common denominators of contemporary Jewish life in Central Europe, such as an intense confrontation with the heritage of the Holocaust and unrelenting antisemitism on the one hand and on the other hand, huge appreciation of traditional Jewish learning and culture by a considerable part of non-Jewish Europeans. The volume includes contributions on Jewish life in central European countries like Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, and Germany.

Historical thinking has a politics that shapes its ends. While at least two generations of scholars have been guided into their working lives with this axiom as central to their profession, it is somewhat of a paradox that historiography is so often nowadays seen as a matter of intellectual choices operating outside the imperatives of quotidian politics, even if the higher realms of ideological inclinations or historiographical traditions can be seen to have played a role. The politics of historical thinking, if acknowledged at all, is seen to belong to the realms of nonprofessional ways of the instrumentalisation of the past. This series seeks to centre the politics inherent in historical thinking, professional and non-professional, promoted by states, political organisations, ¿nationalities¿ or interest groups, and to explore the links between political (re-)education, historiography and mobilisation or (sectarian?) identity formation. We hope to bring into focus the politics inherent in historical thinking, professional, public or amateur, across the world today. This book applies the tools of nanosyntax to the natural language phenomenon of negation. Most work on negation is concerned with the study of sentence negation, while low scope negation or constituent negation is hardly ever systematically discussed in the literature. The present book aims to fill that gap, by investigating scopally different negative markers in a sample of 23 typologically diverse languages. A four-way classification of negative markers is argued for and it is shown how meaningful syncretism patterns arise across those four groups of negative markers in the language sample investigated. The syncretisms are meaningful in that they track the natural semantic scope of negation, and provide support to the idea that morphology is not arbitrary, but points to submorphemic structure. Consequently, this study leads to a decomposition of the negative morpheme into five privative features: Tense, Focus, Classification, Quantity and Negation proper. Finally, the book argues that sentence, constituent and lexical negation can all be treated in the same module of the grammar, i.e. syntax.

Seniority-based hierarchy (jouge kankei) is omnipresent in Japanese group dynamics. How one comports, depends on one¿s status and position vis-à-vis others. To-date, no study shows what constitutes this hierarchy, where and when individuals growing up in Japan first come into contact with it, as well as how they learn to function in it. This book fills in the lacunae. Considering jouge kankei as a social institution and adopting a discourse analytic approach, this volume examines the ways in which institutional jouge kankei as an enduring feature of Japanese social life are created and reproduced. The monograph analyses how seniority-based relations are enacted, legitimised, transmitted, and reified by social actors through language use and paralinguistic discursive practices, such as the use of space, objects, signs, and symbols. It also looks at how established rules could be challenged. The empirical data on which findings are based are gathered through 10 months of ethnographic fieldwork from 2015 to 2018 in Japanese schools, with certain types of data (school club etiquette books and uniforms) being presented and analysed for the first time. This volume also shows continuity and change of jouge kankei from school to work.

Multilingualism has become an increasingly common global phenomenon especially in the last two decades. Therefore, multilingual programmes have now been regarded as a cornerstone of education systems in many countries around the world. Disputation literature is a type of text in which usually two non-human entities (such as trees, animals, drinks, or seasons) try to establish their superiority over each other by means of a series of speeches written in an elaborate, flowery register. As opposed to other dialogue literature, in disputation texts there is no serious matter at stake only the preeminence of one of the litigants over its rival. These light-hearted texts are known in virtually every culture that flourished in the Middle East from Antiquity to the present day, and they constitute one of the most enduring genres in world literature. The present volume collects over twenty contributions on disputation literature by a diverse group of world-renowned scholars. From ancient Sumer to modern-day Bahrain, from Egyptian to Neo-Aramaic, including Latin, French, Middle English, Armenian, Chinese and Japanese, the chapters of this book study the multiple avatars of this venerable text type.

The overarching goal of this volume is to explore a number of recent developments in Phase Theory (both theoretical and empirical), thus contributing to our overall understanding of the concept of phases.The volume is divided into three parts, of which the first focuses on the traditional role played by phases in defining successive cyclicity, while at the same time examining the interaction between that traditional role and Chomsky (2013)¿s proposal about labeling. The second part focuses on the question of whether only the highest projection of the clausal and nominal domain, CP and DP, are phases or whether those domains also contain an internal phase: vP and NP/NumP/QP, while the third part contains two chapters that focus on the extent to which ellipsis can be used as a reliable diagnostic for phasehood.As a whole, the volume provides a detailed and in-depth view on a number of recent developments in Phase Theory, which will likely continue to dominate the debate for several years to come.

This book is a comprehensive and authoritative description of the Greater Awyu family of Papuan languages. The book brings together many decades of research on Greater Awyu languages, including 10 years of field work by the author. The book presents a description of major patterns found in languages of the family: phonology, morphology, syntax and discourse. In addition, major aspects of the anthropological linguistics of Greater Awyu languages are described: counting systems, language names, kinship, linguistic ideologies, lexical substitution registers, avoidance and taboo. The linguistic patterns of Greater Awyu languages are systematically placed in the genetic, typological, areal and historical contexts of New Guinea. The long dialect continuums within the family, by reflecting different diachronic stages, offer a window on the origin of switch reference, clause chaining, topic markers, postpositions and double-headed relative clauses. The book is relevant for readers interested in the typological, historical and cultural linguistics of New Guinea but also for anthropologists and historians because the history and cultural practices of Greater Awyu speakers are a key part of the story of this language family.

Proteins are an important nutrient and ingredient in food as well as in nutritional supplements. The application and take up of food proteins, especially plant proteins, has been limited due to their undesirable sensory properties, e.g. taste, odour, and chalky mouth feel. This will need to change if the availability of meat protein becomes scarcer. Documenting the latest research, this book is the first overview of the recent advances in flavour research of food proteins, with an emphasis on the major plant proteins, e.g. soy and pulse proteins. The topics to be covered include sensory and instrumental characterization of flavour compounds in food proteins, how flavour profiles in food proteins can be formed or altered, research advances of individual food proteins, the use of food protein products as flavouring ingredients, and future trends of flavouring food proteins. There is a growing interest in using plant proteins in food formulation and industrial applications, but no book has yet covered this systematically until now. Summarizing research advances in consumer studies and flavour chemistry that focus on food proteins, the book will discuss the flavour properties and problems in each major and novel food protein source for the academic and industry market.

The Monastery of Pantokrator, founded by John II Komnenos and his wife Piroska-Irene, is not only one of the most important and most impressive monastic complexes of the Komnenian age, it is also one of the few to occupy a key position in the life of Constantinople in the Palaiologan age, given that its mortuary chapel (Heroon) was also the last resting place of many members of the latter dynasty. The first attempt to chronicle its history, based on the texts known at the time, was undertaken by G. Moravscik (1932). Interest was rekindled by P. Gautier¿s critical edition of its Typikon (1971), and more recently by restoration work on its buildings. This volume brings together a comprehensive selection of all the texts concerning or connected with the Monastery of Pantokrator, and through them it demonstrates the Monastery¿s importance and its role throughout the history of the Byzantine Empire¿a role that has received insufficient attention, given that older studies have tended to focus on the 12th century. The texts cover the situation in Constantinople before the Monastery was founded, the historical and cultural context within which it was established, its Typikon (monastic formulary), the descriptions of Slav and Western travellers, the Byzantine texts (homiletic, historical, hagiographic, and poetic) relating to the Monastery and its history from the 12th to the 15th century, the Byzantine officials associated with it, and the celebration of the principal festivals in its churches. It also contains critical editions of and commentaries on the two versions of the Synaxarion of Irene Komnene, a speech referring to the Empress¿s associate in the construction of the Monastery, another on the translation of the icon of St. Demetrios from the Church of St. Demetrios in Thessalonica to the Monastery of Pantokrator, an Office of the Translation of the Holy Stone, the verse Synaxarion composed for the consecration of the Monastery, and the known and unpublished poems by Byzantine poets (12th-15th c.) relating to it, as well as an extensive bibliography.

Sie verdeutlichen, wie Erwartungen und die Schlussfolgerungen daraus kollektiv verhandelt wurden. Erwartungsmanagement zielte darauf ab, Enttäuschung zu vermeiden oder ihre Folgen zu minimieren. Dies gelang nicht immer. Doch Enttäuschung bedeutete niemals das ¿Ende der Geschichte". Die Beiträge illustrieren vielmehr, welche Wege Personen und Gruppen fanden, um Enttäuschung zu überwinden.

Jahrhunderts sowie die Erforschung des Valenzwandels und grammatikographische Betrachtungen zu Verbpartikeln im Mittelpunkt. Entwicklungen im Bereich der Terminologie oder Tendenzen zur Überlänge in der juristischen Sprache finden sich in einem Abschnitt zu Fachwortschätzen und zu politischer Sprache ebenso wie die Analyse von Rassenkonzepten in der völkischen Bewegung oder jüdische Reaktionen auf die antisemitische Propaganda in Deutschland. Formulierungstraditionen und pragmatische Phänomene beschließen diesen Band, so der Gebrauch von Vor- und Nachnamen, Worte und Formeln (west-)europäischer Epistolographie, Dialektales und die gegenwartssprachliche Perspektive auf Authentizität.

Die Untersuchung widmet sich dem Phanomen des Schreibens, genauer desliterarischen und wissenschaftlichen Schreibprozesses, und zwar an der Schnittstelle zwischen Literaturwissenschaft, empirischerSchreibforschung, Kognitionswissenschaften und Wissenschaftsgeschichte.Sie analysiert eine Vielzahl bislang unbekannter Manuskripte und Quellen kanonischer Autoren des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts.

Das französische Chanson ist ein intermediales Genre von nationaler und internationaler Tragweite. Im Zuge der Medienrevolutionen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts erfährt die französische Chanson-Kultur eine gattungsgeschichtlich relevante Weiterentwicklung. Damit ist auch eine verstärkte nationale Markierung des nun international erfolgreichen Genres verbunden. Die vorliegende Studie liefert erstmalig eine umfassende kulturwissenschaftliche Untersuchung des ¿französischen Chansons¿. Anhand eines mythentheoretischen Ansatzes wird die mediale Mehrdimensionalität des Chansons tiefergehend erforscht und die komplexe Vernetzungsstruktur des Genres dargelegt. Auf Grundlage einschlägiger Theorien zu modernen Mythen (H. Blumenberg, C. Lévi-Strauss, R. Barthes) zeigt die Autorin, dass das moderne französische Chanson eine ¿mythische Qualität¿ aufweist. Dies geschieht in einer philologischen Analyse von über 100 Chansons der letzten 150 Jahre und in einer Untersuchung repräsentativer Chanson-Ikonen. Inwiefern die ¿mythische Qualität¿ auch diskursiv erzeugt wird, macht schließlich die Beschäftigung mit der populärwissenschaftlichen Literatur zum Chanson deutlich.

Die Studie widmet sich erstmals epochenübergreifend der jüdischen Beteiligung in der italienischen Frauenbewegung. Aus einer transnationalen Perspektive und auf der Basis neu erschlossener Egodokumente, zeitgenössischer Zeitschriften, den Archiven jüdischer Gemeinden sowie der Überlieferung von Polizei und Behörden richtet Ruth Nattermann den Fokus auf die Erfahrungen italienisch-jüdischer Protagonistinnen im liberalen Einheitsstaat, während des Ersten Weltkriegs und der faschistischen Diktatur bis 1945. Das Ziel besteht darin, die Spannungen des Emanzipationsprozesses zwischen Partizipation und Abgrenzung herauszuarbeiten sowie die Marginalisierung und Verfolgung während des faschistischen Regimes aus dem Blickwinkel jüdischer Frauen zu betrachten. Dass die faschistische Rassengesetzgebung des Jahres 1938 nicht das Ende einer idyllischen Integration, sondern den Höhepunkt einer langfristigen Entwicklung bildete, wird anhand der Untersuchung italienisch-jüdischer Akteurinnen in ihren Beziehungen zur nicht-jüdischen Mehrheitsgesellschaft eindrücklich demonstriert. Trotz ihres bedeutenden Einflusses auf die transnationale Orientierung der italienischen Frauenbewegung blieb ihre Emanzipation als Frauen und Jüdinnen unvollkommen.

Der Umgang mit Wissen und Informationen durch das Urheberrecht ist seit etwa 30 Jahren in eine Akzeptanzkrise geraten. Die politischen Regulierungsinstanzen verteidigen weiterhin die Fundamente des Urheberrechts und die exklusiven Schutzansprüche der individuellen Urheber, obwohl diese nicht mehr der Realität entsprechen. Nicht zuletzt aus der Wissenschaft selbst entwickelt sich der Widerstand gegen die fortschreitende Kommodifizierung des überwiegend mit öffentlichen Mitteln produzierten Wissens. Das Buch geht den Fragen nach, ob Finanzierungsmodelle, die Nutzungsfreiheit in die kommerzielle Verwertungs- und Publikationswirtschaft integrieren, nachhaltig sind und ob sich nicht in Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaftlern, Förder- und Vermittlungsorganisationen wie Bibliotheken, aber auch von Verlagen neue offene Informationsprodukte und -dienstleistungen entwickeln können. Der Autor schlägt das Konzept der ¿Nutzungsrechte und Nutzungsfreiheit für Wissen und Information¿ vor, das an Stelle des individualistischen Urheberrechts treten soll.

Die Beitrage des Bandes untersuchen in einem mediengeschichtlichen Zugriff die Anfangsphase der franzosischen Religionskriege. Sie rucken das Geschehen der Jahre vor der Bartholomausnacht (1572) ins Zentrum der Betrachtung und thematisieren die vielgestaltigen medialen Erscheinungsformen gesellschaftlicher Konfliktkommunikation. Eine von der Forschung bislang wenig beachtete Zeit der dramatischen Geschichte Frankreichs in der zweiten Halfte des 16. Jahrhunderts wird so mit einem bislang nicht systematisch erprobten methodischen Zugang bearbeitet.
