War and Peace (1869) is a novel by Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. Serialized between 1865 and 1867, it was published in book form in 1869 and has since been recognized as a masterpiece of world literature. Notable for its epic scale, War and Peace encompasses hundreds of characters, diligently following its five central families across fifteen years while featuring detailed imaginings of such historical figures as Napoleon Bonaparte. In Books VI-X, he explores the emotions of his wide cast of characters who, during a period of tenuous peace, attempt to return to a sense of normalcy. Following Napoleon's defeat of Russian and Austrian forces at the Battle of Austerlitz, the Rostov, Bezukhov, and Bolkonsky families struggle to adapt to a changing world. While Prince Andrei attempts to balance his political obligations with his growing affection for Natasha Rostov, his friend Pierre finds himself at a crossroads. Disillusioned with Freemasonry, obsessed with discovering a way to live ethically, he grows increasingly volatile and despondent. When Natasha is attacked by the vicious Anatole Kuragin, Pierre finds himself in the position of comforting her, and they soon form a strong attachment. After several years, however, Napoleon's army begins advancing on Russia once more, bringing uncertainty and chaos to its traumatized people. With its juxtaposition of political peace with the private and public turmoil of his characters, Tolstoy's story brings history to life while reminding us that the past is always closer than we care to think. As ambitious as it is triumphant, Leo Tolstoy's masterpiece is an epic novel of history and family, a story of faith and the will to persevere in the face of unspeakable catastrophe. War and Peace is a work that transcends both history and description, not just for the scale of its narrative and setting, but for the scope of its philosophical interests. Since its publication, it has been praised as an essential work of literature by Ivan Turgenev, Gustave Flaubert, Thomas Mann, and Ernest Hemingway, and has been adapted for film, theater, and television countless times. This edition of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace is a classic of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers. The Garden of God (1923) is a novel by Henry De Vere Stacpoole. The second in a trilogy of novels including The Blue Lagoon (1908) and The Gates of Morning (1925), The Garden of God is a story of romance and adventure inspired by the author's travels in the South Pacific. The novel was adapted into the film Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991), a sequel to the 1980 hit drama starring Brooke Shields. "The whale boat and the dinghy lay together, gunnels grinding as they lifted to the swell. [...] [B]eyond and around from sky-line to sky-line the blue Pacific lay desolate beneath the day. 'They are dead.' He was gazing at the forms on the dinghy, the form of a girl with a child embraced in one arm, and a youth. Clasping one another, they seemed asleep." Aboard the whaling vessel Raratonga, Arthur Lestrange discovers his long-lost son and niece after years of searching. As they pull up alongside their fishing boat, however, he realizes they are too late-the shipwrecked youths have succumbed to the elements. Between them, a child lies asleep, offering some hope to the devastated father and crew. Visited by Dick and Emmeline in a dream, Arthur endeavors to return to Palm Tree, the island where they raised their son in peace. There, the boy is brought up by his grandfather and a crewmember named Jim Kearney, who keep him safe and teach him the ways of survival. When a beautiful Kanaka native named Karolin arrives from a nearby atoll, he discovers something no one could have prepared him for: love. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Henry De Vere Stacpoole's The Garden of God is a classic of British literature reimagined for modern readers.

The Last Egyptian (1908) is a novel by L. Frank Baum. Although he is more widely known as the author of the Land of Oz series, Baum also used several pseudonyms to make forays into more conventional fiction for adults. The Last Egyptian, published anonymously, is a story of corruption, betrayal, romance, and adventure. It was adapted into a 1914 silent film by Baum and J. Farrell MacDonald, an influential and prolific figure in early American cinema. "'I regret,' said he, with mock politeness, 'that I have never before heard of your great forefather.' 'But why should you?' asked the Egyptian. 'You are, I suppose, one of those uneasy investigators that prowl through Egypt in a stupid endeavor to decipher the inscriptions on the old temples and tombs. You can read a little-yes; but that little puzzles and confuses you.'" Traveling across Egypt alone, English Egyptologist Winston Bey encounters an interesting local named K¿ra. According to the young man, he is the descendant of Ahtka-R¿, a powerful advisor the Rameses II. Although he questions the truth of this claim, Winston enlists K¿ra's help. Back home, K¿ra cares for his ailing grandmother Hatatcha, who reveals a life-changing secret upon her deathbed: he is the grandson of Lord Roane, a powerful Englishman who abandoned her while she was pregnant. From then on, K¿ra swears to exact revenge on the man and his family. Before she dies, she shows him the way to their family's ancient treasure, a horde of jewels and priceless artifacts with which he will fund his plot. While The Last Egyptian is far from the fantasy and fairy tale style most of Baum's readers adore him for, it remains an entertaining work of adventure fiction for devoted fans of the Oz series and newcomers alike. This edition of L. Frank Baum's The Last Egyptian is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers. Of One Blood (1902-1903) is a novel by Pauline E. Hopkins. Recognized as one of the earliest works of science fiction by an African American writer, Of One Blood was originally published in The Colored American Magazine, America's first monthly periodical covering African American arts and culture. Combining themes of racial identity and passing within a genre-blending narrative of Gothic horror and the occult, Hopkins weaves a masterful tale of conspiracy, a lost African kingdom, and murder. Struggling with the mental and financial pressures of medical school, Reuel Briggs-a Black man who passes as white-decides to take a night off in order to attend a local concert. There, he sees the singer Dianthe Lusk, a beautiful woman who possess a mysterious aura. The next day, Reuel is called to assist at the scene of a train accident. There, he chances upon Dianthe, who has sustained a blow to the head. Using an experimental form of mesmerism, Reuel brings her back to life, but she seems to be suffering from near total amnesia. After nursing her back to health with the help of his best friend Aubrey, Reuel finds her a place to stay in Boston. Hoping to marry her, he offers to embark on an archaeological expedition organized by Aubrey, who claims to have discovered a lost Ethiopian kingdom. As the story unfolds, redemption turns to betrayal, best friends become sworn enemies, and a secret from the distant past threatens to change Reuel's life forever. With this thrilling tale of race, adventure, and mystery, Hopkins proves herself as a true pioneer of American literature, a woman whose talent and principles afforded her the vision necessary for illuminating the injustices of life in a nation founded on slavery and genocide. This edition of Pauline E. Hopkins' Of One Blood is a classic work of African American literature reimagined for modern readers.
