Originally published in 1976, this book was one of the first in any language to apply the techniques of acoustic phonetics to Mandarin Chinese. It describes the acoustic cues for the perception of nine vowels and four tones, based on an analysis of the speech of one male speaker of the Peking dialect.

Originally published in 1972, this is the first in a series of dialect studies by the Princeton Chinese Linguistics Project. Yue is one of the major Chinese dialect groups and Cantonese is the standard dialect in the group. The present volume surveys the phonology of Cantonese.
