Since Ameis-Hentze-Cauer (1868-1913) no comprehensive, scholarly commentary of Homer's Iliad has been published in German. In the meantime considerable progress has been made in many traditional areas of Homeric studies (language, realia, structure etc.). In addition, generally acknowledged new fields such as narratology have been systematically studied. Furthermore, the knowledge of the Mycenaean language (Linear B) and oral poetry provide completely new possibilities of textual constitution and analysis. Using the old Ameis-Hentze-Cauer as a starting point, the new commentary reflects the current scholarship on Homer in a comprehensive way. As a new standard work, the "e;Basel Commentary"e; of the Iliad has received considerable recognition among scholars worldwide. The fresh concept in terms of content and form serves the needs of different groups of users. The commentary primarily aims at students and academic teachers (at schools and universities), not only of Classics but also of cultural and literary studies as well as of humanities in general. The original plan to proceed from book to book was abandoned. With respect to the current preferences in schools and universities the six most important books will be available until 2009 at the latest: 3 (teichoscopia, truce, single-combat between Menelaus and Paris), 6 (the episode of Diomedes and Glaucus, Hector in Troy), 9 (overtures to the angry Achilles), 19 (Achilles' reconciliation and return to battle), 22 (Hector's death) and 24 (Hector's body is returned to Priam by Achilles). In Mitwirkung mit der neuen Ausgabe in der Bibliotheca Teubneriana - der Progymnasmata von Severos von Alexandreia - befasst sich das Buch mit einem der interessantesten Rhetoren der spatantiken Literatur. Es handelt sich dabei um einen Parallelband zum BT-Text, in dem die erste Ubersetzung in einer modernen Sprache des Corpus von Severus, eine Studie uber die Biographie des Autors, eine vollstandige und detaillierte Analyse der stilistischen, sprachlichen und rhetorischen Komponenten fur jedes Progymnasma und schlielich einen philologischen Kommentar erfasst sind. Insbesondere hinsichtlich der noch nicht besprochenen Biographie von Severus wird zum allerersten Mal eine Identifizierung desselben mit dem bekannteren Severus, dem Patriarchen von Antiocheia, vorgeschlagen.

This work provides new editions with introduction and commentary of five odes from Pindar's Nemeans. Three celebrate victories won by Aeginetans at the Nemean games (Nemeans 4, 6, and 8). The remaining two are drawn from the appendix to the book: Nemean 10, for the Argive wrestler Theaeus and his family, including the famous myth of the Dioscuri, and Nemean 11, for the installation of a prytanis on the island of Tenedos. The commentaries elucidate problems of metre, text, and interpretation, and provide up-to-date treatment of the language and subject-matter of the poems.

Die zweite, durchgesehene Auflage zum Kommentar des Ersten Gesanges (Band I,2002) war für einige Monate vergriffen. Nunmehrsteht den Benutzerndie dritte, durchgesehene Auflagezur Verfügung.

Außer den Dialogen Platons selbst und neben den platonisierenden Schriften Plutarchs sowie dem Abriss der platonischen Lehre des Apuleius bildet der Didaskalikos des Philosophen Alkinoos aus dem 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr. die einzige vollständig erhaltene platonische Schrift vor der Zeit Plotins und des Neuplatonismus. Als Kompendium des platonischen Denkens ist die Schrift Urkunde einer Epoche, in der nach der wechselreichen Geschichte der akademischen Philosophie in der Zeit des Hellenismus nun der Versuch unternommen wurde, wieder zur Lehre Platons selbst zurückzukehren. Seine Bedeutung für die Beurteilung der Geschichte des antiken Platonismus oder gar der antiken Philosophie kann kaum überschätzt werden. Der vorliegenden Edition und Erstübersetzung ins Deutsche werden eine Einleitung sowie eine Bibliographie vorangestellt. Die Anmerkungen zum Text erläutern philosophische Zusammenhänge, erklären philologische Einzelheiten und weisen markante Stellen nach. Zur Erstellung des altgriechischen Textes sind die beiden ältesten und wichtigsten Manuskripte P und V sowie deren Scholien erneut herangezogen worden. Mehrere Lesarten aus der Editions- und Übersetzungstradition des Didaskalikos sowie der Sekundärliteratur sind aufgenommen worden.

Die Prolegomena führen in das bessere Verständnis des Homertextes selbst und in die Art der Kommentierung ein.
