This book provides a technological and scientific endeavor to assist the society and farming communities, in different world regions and scales, to improve their productivity and sustainability. Through providing the latest technology and by deepening the understanding of possible cost-efficient techniques and application opportunities for different scales and situations, it will show why the implementation of these technologies faces numerous technological, economic and policy barriers while giving suggestions and examples as to how these hurdles can be overcome. Costs of novel technologies using both conventional and renewable energy sources are discussed and compared with those of other technologies for agricultural production, taking into account environmental and social costs that are caused by using fossil fuel based technologies. Energy efficiency is highlighted since it is of special importance in the systems. Also, applications of new and improved technologies are discussed and promoted. Finally, the book highlights what further research and development needs to be performed.

Providing a complete and in-depth overview of the available knowledge in the area of low energy and low carbon architecture. The scope of this edited book includes several important topics ranging from chapters giving a broad view of the progressing models in ecologically responsible environments to other chapters focussing on recent advances in design strategies and building technologies in low energy heating, cooling, daylighting, materials, and building sustainable systems. Two other essential topics are covered, providing a link between theory and implementation: sustainable energy policies/standards and performance modeling in low energy architecture. Finally, the book will give the readers insight into the future of low energy and low carbon architecture in the beyond-green era and discussed in the broader context of the progressing theories of regenerative design.

This book addresses two distinct, but related and highly important geoenvironmental applications: CO2 sequestration in underground formation, and Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES). Sequestration of carbon dioxide in underground formations is considered an effective technique and a viable strategy for the mitigation of global warming and climate change. However, the short-term and long-term consequences of such an operation might be catastrophic if the involved hydro-chemo-physical and mechanical processes at the regional level are not properly addressed. Compressed air energy storage is a relatively new field of geoenvironmental application, but gaining a lot of momentum due to its effective utilization for energy storage. Renewable energy sources, such as wind energy, can be efficiently stored in the form of a compressed air in underground formations at off-peak times, and re-utilized upon demand. However, pumping and releasing compressed air can cause hydromechanical effects on the region, causing subsidence, upheaving and minor earthquakes. Considering the great potentials of these two geoenvironmental applications and their consequences, it is vital to model the involved flow processes and develop numerical tools, which are capable of describing such processes in an accurate, stable and computationally efficient manner. This book aims at attaining such models and numerical tools.

Worldwide, many regions have a great potential to cover part of their pressing water needs by renewable energy powered water treatment processes using either thermal or membrane based technologies. Not only arid and semiarid regions are increasingly suffering from water shortage but also many other regions face a limitation of freshwater resources either by increasing contamination of surface water bodies or groundwater resources unsuitable for drinking and irrigation purposes either due to their high grade of mineralization or their contents of toxic components. In many areas without centralized water supply, treatment techniques using locally available renewable energy resources such as wind, solar and geothermal can provide an economical, social and environmentally sustainable option for clean water production from seawater and from highly mineralized or otherwise unsuitable ground- and surface water. This book provides an overview on possible cost-efficient techniques and application opportunities for different scales and shows why the implementation of these technologies faces numerous technological, economic and policy barriers and provides suggestions how they can be overcome. It serves as a synoptic compendium of the fundamentals of freshwater production using renewable energies, applicable to all types of water, ranging from brackish to marine water and also including industrial and communal residual water. The book is aimed at professionals, academics and decision makers worldwide, working in the areas of water resources, water supply, land planning, energy planning, greenhouse gases emission mitigation and rural development.

This edited book brings together leading researchers discussing the recent trends and needs in micro and nano-engineering fuel cells, creating new engineering knowledge, and optimizing the system on a micro and nano-scale. The small scales discussed in this book are particularly important, because most of the underlying interactions governing the fuel cell performance occur at a scale from nanometers to microns; and some engineering tasks that cannot be accomplished in macro-scale are proven achievable in micro and nano-scales. The book can be categorized into two subject areas: theoretical foundation research and applications research.
