Contributions to this volume explore the interconnections between ancient Greek mythographers and their contemporaries working in non-mythographic genres of both poetry and prose. Focus on this dynamic intersection illuminates the Greco-Roman intellectual world in which both operated and highlights for scholars and students of Greek and Latin literature the variety and complexity of ancient Greek mythographic practice.

This book constitutes the first autonomous monograph on the literary qualities of Arrian's Anabasis of Alexander. Vasileios Liotsakis offers an analysis of Arrian's narrative and language in his portraiture of Alexander the Great, aspiring to thereby shed new light on the ways in which Arrian contributed to the literary representation of the Macedonian king, importantly in terms of both style and interpretation.

The penetration of Greek culture in the West is often seen as indissolubly linked to the activity of a few Greek intellectuals, who provided a training in Greek to groups of young Western humanists. While not denying the key role these Greek intellectuals had in the fifteenth century, the current volume aims to broaden our view of a series of phenomena concerned with contact between the West and Greek culture.

This monograph examines the reception of Pindar in the poetry produced at the court of the first three Ptolemies (ca. 305¿222 BCE). Through active engagement with the works of Pindar, poets such as Callimachus, Theocritus, Apollonius, and Posidippus responded to the encomiastic needs of their Ptolemaic patrons and fashioned an image of Pindar as the praise poet par excellence.

This volume tackles some pivotal aspects of the critical and exegetical study of Homer, Hesiod, Pindar, and Aeschylus in Greek culture throughout antiquity and the Middle Ages: the focus is on the material form of the transmission of the exegesis from papyri to codices, on the examination of hitherto unexplored branches of the manuscript evidence, on the discussion of some important scholia, and on the role played by the indirect tradition.

By exploring the impact of formalized speech in particular and craftsmanship rhetoric in general upon Attic drama as a moral and educational force in the Athenian city-state, the present volume generates for the first time attention to the unified intentions of the dramatist and the orator to establish favourable conditions of internal stability in democratic Athens.

The volume contains nineteen studies by prominent scholars in the field of Greek lexicography, covering all phases of the language, ancient, medieval and modern, and various aspects of Greek lexicography, e.g. historical issues, etymology, morphological, semantic and syntactic problems as well as the study of individual words.

The apparently disjointed and philosophically perplexing Statesman explores, among many other topics, the role and nature of the statesman; governance, virtue, and the law; and (in the framework of a Myth) the origins of the universe and humankind. Representing differing hermeneutical traditions, the volume¿s authors engage with these issues in ways which, though frequently divergent, do much to illuminate a complex and multifaceted work.

This unique personality represents itself the conflict between superhuman moral indifference for mortal destiny and anthropomorphic feelings for human beings.

Flavian Rome was inaugurated by brutal civil wars that left lasting scars, but despite current interest in both Flavian literature and Roman civil war, Flavian literature¿s contribution to Rome¿s literature of bellum ciuile remains understudied. This volume shines a spotlight on these neglected Flavian voices and shows that in the wake of 69 CE, writing civil war became an endemic and inescapable project for Flavian authors.
