Die Frage, was Raum sei, gehört zu den grundlegenden ontologischen und erkenntnistheoretischen Fragen, die unter je konkreten historischen Bedingungen unterschiedliche Ausprägungen und Verständnismodelle hat. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Raumproblematik auf der Grundlage von chinesischen philosophischen und kunsttheoretischen Texten der Übergangsepoche von der Ming- zur Qing-Dynastie. Ausgehend von den Reflexionen der Gelehrten über Kognition, Wirklichkeit und Tradition werden die kulturellen Bedingtheiten und erkenntnistheoretischen Voraussetzungen von Raumauffassungen in der untersuchten Zeit systematisch rekonstruiert. Diese Rekonstruktionen erlauben, die in einer Vielzahl von untersuchten Textquellen geschilderten Raumerfahrungen und -konzeptualisierungen des Räumlichen mit der verbundenen Begrifflichkeiten in unterschiedlichen Wissensbereichen - kosmologisch-metaphysischen, bewusstseinstheoretischen und bildgestalterischen - begründet und sinnvoll auszulegen. Die Rekonstruktionen und Analysen ermöglichen, einerseits, eine tiefgreifede Kontrastierung zu den Konzeptualisierungsweisen des Räumlichen im Rahmen des Wissenssystems der europäischen Neuzeit. Anderseits lassen sie sich an die wichtigsten Zugängen zur Raumproblematik in der gegenwärtigen philosophischen, soziologischen und anthropologischen Forschung sowie an nicht-klassische Modelle der Raumvorstellung und assoziierte Kulturtypologien in Europa anzuschließen.

Anfang der 1920er Jahre, ausgelost durch das Aufkommen einer sozialistischen Bewegung nach der russischen Oktoberrevolution, entstand in Japan ein Diskurs uber die sozialpolitische Rolle des Intellektuellen, der sich bis in die 1970er Jahre hineinzog. Angefuhrt wurde er von marxistisch und humanistisch orientierten Literaturkritikern und Schriftstellern, die sich Fragen nach der sozialen Verantwortung der Literatur und der diesbezuglichen Rolle der Intelligenz stellten. Der japanische Intellektuellenbegriff ist im Rahmen dieses Diskurses vor dem geschichtlichen und gesellschaftspolitischen Kontext sukzessiv neu geformt worden. Er ist Zeugnis einer steten Auseinandersetzung, gespiegelt in differenzierten Begriffen, was ein Intellektueller sei, und welchen Platz dieser in der Gesellschaft einnehmen solle. Anhand einer Diskursanalyse reprasentativer Debatten zwischen 1920 und 1970 unter Einbezugnahme von Bourdieus Theorie des literarischen Feldes wird die Entwicklung, die Rolle und die Selbstwahrnehmung des modernen japanischen Intellektuellen in der Zwischen- und Nachkriegszeit des 20. Jahrhunderts gezeichnet und ein Profil des Schriftstellers als Intellektueller definiert.

This thesis is a direct contribution in the field history of thoughts in Late Imperial China, and it adds insight about the reception of tradition in the first half of the 20th century, in particular Confucianism. It explores the criticism of one school (the orthodox daoxue-Confucianism) against another (hanxue-Confucianism) by studying one object of criticism in particular. The author of the criticism, Fang Dongshu (1772-1851), attacks Dai Zhen (1723-1777). Hitherto, research in the 20th century had celebrated Dai Zhen and the scholars of his school of thought/method as precursors to scientific thinking in pre-modern China. Similarly the orthodox schools were set aside as opponents to modernization of society and philosophy. Through the thorough study of arguments made on both sides, this thesis suggests a different understanding, because scholars that lived in a Confucian society had different requirements about Confucian teachings and their impact.Considering the points Fang Dongshu points out about his adversaries contributes to a historically more accurate understanding of the history of Chinese philosophy before the Opium Wars and the end of the Imperial Age.

Between 1910 and 1945 Korea was subjected to Japanese colonial rule. Monuments, Memory, and Identity investigates ways how postcolonial South Korea commemorated this difficult past in light of changing political and social conditions, and against the background of the divided nation. By analyzing museums, memorial halls, parks and monuments, the author deciphers and maps the South Korean commemorative landscape. He analyzes the layouts of the country's well-known sites of memory and explores the on-site plaques, exhibits, and photos as well as the booklets and publications. This book underpins the shifts and trends in recollecting this important historical period by addressing the following questions: How has postcolonial South Korea been constructing and reconstructing its colonial past? Why were certain narratives and images chosen at different times? What debates, controversies, and challenges were involved in this dynamic process? Furthermore, the author discusses the South Korean case within the broader context of the postcolonial discourse.

This book provides new insights into the creation and use of written texts in medieval Japan. Drawing upon lawsuits from Ategawa no sh¿ in central Japan between the early eleventh and early fourteenth centuries, the author analyses the use of writing by various social groups ¿ temple priests, warriors and peasants. Though these social groups had different levels of literacy and accordingly followed different communicative traditions, their use of writing had common features. In the semi-literate society of medieval Japan the dissemination and reception of written texts took place primarily through speaking and hearing. Documents of the medieval period therefore had a distinctly oral characteristic. Priests, warriors and peasants all alluded to motifs in their legal pleas that were in essence given by the oral world of tales, legends and gossip. By showing that literacy was not in conflict but interacted with orality, the author uncovers an important aspect of the use of the written word in medieval Japan.

This book is about the self in contemporary Japan. In contrast to Euro-American cultures, in which the self is considered to be the essence of personhood, in Japanese culture the self is constantly reconstructed in relation to others. This particular self is studied by examining the ways popular culture is consumed, with a special focus on manga, the Japanese word for comics and cartoons. The first part of the book contains an ethnographic research in which the author investigates the relationship between popular media and the search for self-knowledge. In the second part a historical analysis traces the development of self-seeking in Japan since the country's modernisation period.
