This volume represents the proceedings of the summer course on Mathematical Topics in Fluid Mechanics, held in Lisbon, in September 1991. Amongst the topics covered are mathematical problems arising in differential models for viscoelastic fluids and shock waves in resonant dispersion media.

This book illustrates applications of mathematics to various processes (physiological or artificial) involving flowing blood, including hemorheology, microcirculation, coagulation, kidney filtration and dialysis, offering a historical overview of each topic.
