This is the fifth in a series of personal property tax records. This volume covers the years 1863-1866 and 1868-1870; as well as totals for all years and the home or employer of black males in 1868 and 1869. It is interesting to note in 1865 that nearly one hundred percent of those listed paid the same amount of tax which was forty cents. The introduction includes a breakdown of the various templates during 1863 to 1870, which corresponds to the original documents.

This is the fifth volume in a series of land tax records, which offer a wealth of valuable genealogical data presented in a convenient table format with entries listed alphabetically by surname within each section. This volume covers the period 1875 to 1895. It includes four complete years: 1875, 1880, 1885 and 1895, including the tax for public school and county purposes. Taxes for county purposes were collected for eight years between 1852 and 1861 and began again in 1880. The 1890 Land Tax has been published in a separate book, Northampton County, Virginia "1890" Land Tax. Between 1875 and 1880 the author noticed several inconsistencies such as in 1875 a James T. Ashby Est. 167 1/3 acres and in 1880 a John T. Ashby Est. with the same acreage. There are also discrepancies in number of acres in several areas as well. It is interesting to note the sale of Cape Charles lots between 1885 and 1895. This is the third in a series of personal property tax records for 1782 to 1850. The previous personal property tax books cover the periods 1782-1799 and 1800-20. This volume includes the years 1822, 1825, 1828, 1830, 1832, 1835, 1838, 1840, 1842, 1843, 1845, 1848 and 1850. It correlates with the land tax record years during the period with the exception of 1826. Edmund P. Roberts, Commissioner of Revenue, collected personal property and land tax records until his death late in 1842. Starting in 1843 his son, Edward Roberts served as commissioner of revenue. This also includes totals for each year and a list of retail and ordinary licenses in the back of this work. Unfortunately both are missing in 1833. 1832 is the last year ordinary licenses are noted on the original, however details about ordinaries are found in order books and this information is included in this work. Retail licenses for 1833 in Order Book #39 are also listed as such. Names are in somewhat alphabetical order.

This Land Tax Records book contains all of the readable years between 1782 and 1799. The first two years (1782 and 1783) were done by a single individual. The 1784 to 1786 years are missing with only additions and errors listed; however, all readable additions between 1784 and 1792 are included. 1787 is the first year records exist showing the county was divided into two districts, an upper and lower. Complete years for 1789 and 1790 are missing with only additions and alienations. Beginning with 1791 there are records for one or both districts through 1799. The forms for the most part are the same during the period. The columns of the Land Tax typically include: Proprietors or Persons Names Owning Land; Quantity of Lands (# of Acres); Price or Rate of Land per Acre (2/6, 7/6, 10/); Total Amt. of Value (of Land); and, Amount of the tax @ __ rate sometimes at top of the first page in District. It is interesting to note that the currency of pounds, shillings and pence was used in Land Tax Records far longer than in Personal Property records. This is Northampton County, Virginia's Register of Deaths for 1871 to 1896, a continuation of Sandra Perkins work 1853 to 1870. Many of the entries between 1873 and 1877 were difficult if not impossible to read because pages are either faint or dark. To compensate, the author borrowed the Library of Virginia's copy to make the best and most complete list. This list of over 2,200 names is in alphabetical order with a full-name index in the back with reference page for the parent's names and sources that provided the information. The following is a breakdown of the order of information gleaned from the Death Register: Name in Full, Race (White / Colored or Black), Sex, Date of Death, Place of Death, Name of Disease or Cause of Death, Age (Years / Months / Days), Names of Parents, Where Born, Occupation, Marital Status, and Source of Information (name of person giving information of death and designation of informant such as physician, surgeon, coroner, head of the family, friend, etc.)The top of each original form states "It is hereby requested that the Commissioner of the Revenue in making up their reports shall certify the aggregate number and also give separately the number of White and Colored". The author has included this information for each year, as well as a breakdown of the causes of death by year. This is shown in the 1871-83 and 1884-96 charts. There are six years missing. These include 1879-1881. The Mortality Schedules from June 1, 1879 to May 31, 1880 have been included to fill in some of this gap. This includes fifty-seven from the Capeville District, thirty-four from Eastville District, twenty-three from Johnsontown District and twenty-five from Franktown District for a total of 139.
