Revised and updated version - 2023Recommended in IATEFL Voices The magazine of the International Association for Teachers of English as a Foreign LanguageAndrew Rossiter's A Descriptive Grammar of English by Example should be included on your list of reference materials. It reviews language as it is not only written but also spoken, and will cater for learners from upper-intermediate to advanced levels.... For the invested student, this book is a huge step forward, and having the English language laid out in such a user-friendly approach is a welcome treat for non-native teachers and learners.Reviewed in TESOLANZ bulletin, New Zealand."All good useful stuff and made very user friendly with clear formatting and colour coding. ... a useful, compact grammar reference, especially for those who want to improve their confidence in teaching grammar."Reviewed in EFL Magazine. "This is a useful reference book to have on hand when planning for and teaching grammar lessons. The clarity of explanations and wealth of examples, alongside helpful visual keys, provide both new and experienced teachers with something easy to dip into, regardless of the language level they are teaching."Reviewed in ELTAF Online bulletin, Germany. This book is ... very extensive without being too deep or analytical. The author seems to have a great understanding of many of the challenges that teachers and learners have, and tries to combat these challenges to make the English language more accessible for all."This is a compact pedagogical reference Grammar of English for the 2020s, thorough, complete, original, clearly explained and accessible to all. It covers in detail all the essential points of English grammar, with abundant and carefully chosen examples and clear explanations, avoiding the confusing jargon that is common to many books on English grammar. Approaching grammar as a semantic system rather than from the more technical morphosyntaxic approach currently favoured in the world of linguistics, this book not only takes the mystery out of English grammar but also answers questions that students (and teachers) ask, providing explanations that teachers can use and students can understand. It pays particular attention to the tricky questions that often baffle speakers of other languages, and even native speakers, such as the use of articles and determiners, or of conjunctions and connectors, or when to use an 's or an of for possession, which past tense to use, and other sometimes confusing points. As a descriptive and pedagogical grammar, it shows by example how English is used today, and explains the principles or rules that define this usage. Descriptive grammar does not mean grammar without rules, but grammar with rules that reflect widely accepted contemporary usage. While these rules are largely based on the norms of written English, they apply too to spoken English, and this book points out significant differences where they exist. A Descriptive Grammar of English is designed to cater specifically to the needs of teachers and students in the real life situations of school, university, home study or language classes; crucially, it sets out to demonstrate how simple the underlying rules of basic English grammar really are, not to show how complicated they can be.It provides clear explanations of the many aspects of English grammar that native speakers seem to master intuitively, but are at a loss to explain. How is it that native speakers seem to know by intuition how to put adjectives in the right order? What's the difference between couldn't have and wasn't able to, and so on? Coherently organised, and with a detailed table of contents, it is a very useful handbook for teachers and students from B1 level

English is more than just a language. It is the expression of a culture, of mentalities, of values and a way of life that have evolved over centuries This B1 - B2 intermediate English reader explores some of the key events, traditions, places and people that have helped to shape life and culture in the English-speaking world today.. Designed for use in school or for private reading, these carefully written articles provide valuable insight into the English-speaking world for speakers of other languages with other cultural backgrounds. Together they make up a very accessible introduction to the British and American way of life, for students or teachers who understand the importance of the cultural background of the English language. Each of the twenty-seven units is made up of a reading text - average length 500 to 600 words - accompanied by a vocabulary guide and up to three exercises covering comprehension and expression, grammar and / or vocabulary., Most of the twenty-seven units present significant events, places or characters that form part of the cultural background to contemporary life in Britain or the USA. A couple of units, more anecdotal, reflect mentalities and attitudes in the English speaking world - attitudes that may seem normal to Britons or Americans, but rather surprising to some students from different cultural backgrounds. Audio recordings of over half the texts can be accessed online, the recordings using male or female voices and British and American accents as appropriate.

The USA is a country that fascinates people throughout the world, particularly younger generations. It is a country that many want to know more about, many want to visit, and where many would love to study. It is a country we see almost daily on our television screens, on our computers, on our phones, on billboards in magazines or in adverts, a country that is rarely out of the news - be it good news or bad news - from one day to the next. More than any other country, it has crafted for itself a reputation for freedom, democracy and openness. Hailed since the nineteenth century as the "melting pot of nations", and more recently as the leader of the free world and the champion of diversity and civil rights, it has an image like that of no other country on Earth. But how accurate is the image, how did it come about?Rather than provide direct answers to these two questions, this book is a collection of tableaux in advanced-level English, illustrating the mix that is modern America, key people, places, lifestyles and events that have helped make the United States what they are today - in all their diversity. The balanced collection of twenty-two connected but self-contained texts constitutes an overall and rounded narrative that has been carefully written for the specific needs of students of English in schools and colleges around the world, including in the United States.Structured thematically, not by difficulty of language or grammar, this collection of texts offers a unique approach to the teaching of cultural studies in the framework of language classes, ESL, or personal study.Though written primarily for learners of English in high school or college, this book will also prove useful in other learning contexts, and even for general interest reading. Each unit is made up of a text, accompanied by a glossary and exercises for use in class or for private study

The USA is a country that fascinates people worldwide; but with its great contrasts, its diversity, its innovation and its iconic figures, the "leader of the free world" is a country that is not always easy to understand, particularly for those who have never set foot on American soil. Exploring the background to this country is thus a vital step for anyone wanting to comprehend the United States as a nation, its values, its priorities and the American way of life. This book is a balanced collection of twenty-two informative, connected but self-contained texts that throw light on different faces of modern America, its origins, its people and its institutions. As well as being complete in itself, each text is also part of an overall and rounded narrative that has been carefully written for the specific needs of advanced level students in schools and colleges around the world, including in the United States.Structured thematically, not by difficulty of language nor by grammar, this collection of texts offers an original and unique approach to the teaching of American studies in the context of ESL or EFL or language arts, at the higher end of secondary education or senior high school, and college / university. It is also appropriate for home reading and general interest.Texts, which vary in length between 700 and 1200 words and are mostly graded C1 on the CEFR scale (ACTFL Advanced Mid to Advanced High), are accompanied by a range of different language exercises designed to develop reading skills and linguistic awareness. Varied in function of each individual unit, these cover comprehension and expression, words and meanings, grammar and style. From native Americans and their past, to Los Angeles and its future, take a trip through the background to modern America, discover and learn.

About this titleA New English Grammar, American edition, is a reference grammar whose aim is to explain the workings of the English language not just for second language learners (ESL / EFL) but also for teachers and students of English as a first language, i.e. native English speakers.A review of this title published by CATESOL, the California ESL Teachers'' Association, in March 2022 concluded :"This concise and useful reference book ..... will make for a significant and appreciated companion to the majority of ESL textbooks or American English grammar books for students involved in the complexities of learning English as their second, third or fourth language."The American English edition is a new version of the author''s acclaimed Descriptive Grammar of English, first published in 2020. While the grammar of American English and of British English (or International English) are essentially the same, there are some differences, and in this new American English edition, priority is given to American usage, making this an ideal reference book for teachers and students in high school, and for anyone else wanting to gain a clearer understanding of English grammar. Examples of grammar usage have been selected to reflect the life and interests of readers in the United States, making them relevant to the experiences of American students or international students wishing to familiarize themselves with life and culture in the USA. This English Grammar uses American English spelling in those few cases where it differs from British English. It is important however to stress that American English and British English are one and the same language. The biggest differences between the two are phonetic, not grammatical. Native English speakers can usually tell if a speaker is from North America or from Britain, or maybe from Australia or some other part of the English-speaking world; but they will find it much harder to notice, without actually thinking about it, whether a written document is in American English or in British English. There are a few telltale signs; Americans write realize where the British will write realise; Americans write traveled while the British write travelled... and in this case it is the American spelling that respects the traditional rules concerning the doubling or not of consonants in English. In the twenty-first century however, there is so much movement of both written texts and audio documents that the differences between American English and British English are becoming blurred. People in the USA read books and magazine articles, not to mention websites, written in British English, and people in the UK read plenty of books, articles and websites written in American English. While most people in the USA who use a spell-checker when writing will use one that is set up for American English, some will use one set up for British or international English.... and if a few alert readers may notice the difference, most will not, and hardly any will be unduly worried. Still it makes sense for anyone in the USA, or international users who have more contact with American speakers, to look at grammar in an American context, which is what this grammar book does.
