Piccolo mondo moderno, la seconda opera della trilogia costituita da Piccolo mondo antico (1895) e da Il santo (1905), venne pubblicato inizialmente nella Nuova Antologia e poi in volume (1901). Piero Maironi, figlio secondogenito di Franco e Luisa, protagonisti di Piccolo mondo antico, è il sindaco di una cittadina veneta, sposato con la figlia dei marchesi Scremin, colpita subito dopo le nozze da una profonda follia. Membro del partito clericale, vive lontano dalla moglie quando viene profondamente turbato dall'incontro con la bella Jeanne Dessalle, la quale, anche lei infelicemente sposata, lo coinvolge in un rapporto sentimentale che risveglia la sua sensualità, ma che contrasta con le sue convinzioni ideologiche e spirituali. Piero ritroverà l'equilibrio e la pienezza della fede accanto alla moglie morente, decidendo poi di dedicare la propria vita al bene e alla promozione della riforma della Chiesa (Aonia edizioni).

In uno spettrale castello sulle rive di un lago lombardo vive, segregata dallo zio Cesare d'Ormengo, la marchesa Marina di Malombra.
