Riceyman Steps, first published in 1923, is set in ¿dingy and sordid¿ Clerkenwell, in central London, where ¿existence was a dangerous and difficult adventure in almost frantic quest of food, drink and shelter.¿ It¿s there that Henry Earlforward runs a gloomy, dusty store full of secondhand books. He eats less and less with every day, keeps his young servant Elsie working long hours for minimal pay, and never lights a candle when darkness will do. One day he takes notice of Violet, a middle-aged widow who owns a confectionary shop nearby, and they become husband and wife soon after. It quickly becomes clear that his miserliness, his ¿grand passion and vice,¿ has rubbed off on Violet, threatening her chances at happiness just as much as his. His obsession also imperils Elsie¿s ability to help her lover Joe, who returned from World War I with shell shock, and who desperately needs her.The year it was published Riceyman Steps won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction. Its tragic tone represents a departure from many of the novels and stories Arnold Bennett set in the ¿Five Towns,¿ the fictional location inspired by his Staffordshire childhood. Instead, it reflects the pain and disappointment of the years immediately following the Great War. As Earlforward tells a customer early on, ¿We¿re not quite straight here yet. The truth is, we haven¿t been straight since 1914.¿

There are certain men who can love a machine more passionately than they can a woman. They are some of the world's happiest guys. Observe the innovators. They often don't make their living off of invention. They have to spend their free time creating. We refer to the art of "life" as the expression of the soul via the brain and body. There is little doubt that we do not study this art to any significant degree in school. Man will have a fun half-hour reflecting on how his place in the cosmos impacts other people. The diplomat who sets up relationships between our instinctive selves and the cosmos is the brain. It challenges instincts, sides with them, and criticizes certain performances for their lack of insight. Character is and can only be the whole outcome of one's character. A person is kind because they constantly think of benevolent ideas, and they are idle because they habitually think about the momentary pleasures of being idle. Only your own thoughts are within your control. Even your two-year-old baby could challenge you due to the strength of its natural personality. But you have control over your own mind. Your own mind is a sacred space that should not be breached by anything negative.

""Yes, he's one of those men that don't know how to manage. Good situation. Regular income. Quite enough for luxuries as well as needs. Not really extravagant. And yet the fellow's always in difficulties. Somehow he gets nothing out of his money. Excellent flat-half empty! Always looks as if he'd had the brokers in. New suit-old hat! Magnificent necktie-baggy trousers! Asks you to dinner: cut glass-bad mutton, or Turkish coffee-cracked cup! He can't understand it. Explanation simply is that he fritters his income away. Wish I had the half of it! I'd show him-""So we have most of us criticised, at one time or another, in our superior way.We are nearly all chancellors of the exchequer: it is the pride of the moment. Newspapers are full of articles explaining how to live on such-and-such a sum, and these articles provoke a correspondence whose violence proves the interest they excite. Recently, in a daily organ, a battle raged round the question whether a woman can exist nicely in the country on L85 a year. I have seen an essay, ""How to live on eight shillings a week."" But I have never seen an essay, ""How to live on twenty-four hours a day."" Yet it has been said that time is money. That proverb understates the case. Time is a great deal more than money. If you have time you can obtain money-usually. But though you have the wealth of a cloak-room attendant at the Carlton Hotel, you cannot buy yourself a minute more time than I have, or the cat by the fire has.
