"Bei einem Aufenthalt in Litauen im Herbst 1880 hatte ich Gelegenheit in der Gegend von Wilkischken, in diesem Orte selbst wie in den benachbarten Dörfern Kellerischken, Apsteinen, Nepertlauken, Sodenen, also westlich von der Jura, eine grosse Anzahl von Liedern aus dem Munde verschiedener Personen aufzuschreiben. Die Volkspoesie ist in diesem Teile des litauischen Landes noch lebendig und namentlich vielen älteren Leuten so bekannt, dass man Personen findet, die Hunderte dieser Lieder wissen oder wenigstens zu wissen behaupten.Über Fundort, Dialekt, Art der Aufzeichnung u. a. der von uns in diesem Bande veröffentlichten Stücke litauischer Volksliteratur haben wir bei den einzelnen Abteilungen ausführlicher Rechenschaft gegeben.Die Übersetzung der Märchen hielten wir für wünschenswert, damit deren Inhalt Forschern, die sich mit Märchenkunde beschäftigen ohne litauisch zu können, zugänglich werde. Die hinzugefügten Anmerkungen behandeln das Verhältnis der litauischen Märchen zu denen der slavischen Völker und werden, wie wir hoffen, allen willkommen sein, denen die slavischen Sprachen fern liegen."Diese litauische Volkslieder und Märchen aus dem preußischen und dem russischen Litauen sind ein unveränderter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1882.
