Ich habe einen Freund, mit dem ich in einer p a r z i a l e n E h e 4 lebe, den ich aber bald werde p o r t r a i t i r e n l a s s e n , w e i l i c h m i c h s c h o n e i n w e n i g m ü d e a n i h m g e s e h e n h a b e . Die Hauptursache dieser Müdigkeit liegt wohl darin, daß i c h Sie beide, meine günstigen Herren, als die größten Genies betrachte, die auf dem Erdboden leben, Er hingegen mit seinem beschränkten Sinn die hohe Verwirrung Ihrer hohen Geister nicht zu fassen vermag. Neulich war er gar so verwegen, mir eine Stelle aus Duclos moeurs de ce siècle vorzulesen, und sie recht unverschämt auf Sie zu appliciren. Sie lautet nämlich folgendergestalt:Qui sont ceux qui jouissent du droit de pononcer? degens, qui, à force de braver le mèpris, viennent à bout de se faire respecter et de donner le ton; qui n'ont que des opinions et jamais des sentiments; qui en changent, les quittent et les reprennent, sans le savoir ni s'en douter; ou qui sont opiniâtres sans être constans. Voilà cependant les juges des reputations; voilà ceux dont on mépise les sentimens et dont on recherche le suffrage; ceux qui procurent la Consideration, sans en avoir eux mêmes aucune. Vous voyez des hommes dont on vante le mérite; si l'on veut examiner en quoi il consiste, on est étonné du vide; on trouve que tout se borne à un air, un d'importance et de suffsance; un peu d'impertinence n'y nuit pas; et quelques fois le maintien suffit.In deutsch: »Wer sind denn die Herren, die das Recht zu entscheiden ausüben? Man rühmt ihre Verdienste, aber bei näherer Untersuchung erstaunt man über ihre Leerheit und wird bald gewahr, daß sich Alles nur auf ein gewisses Air einschränkt, einen Ton der Wichtigkeit und Selbstgenügsamkeit mit ein wenig Impertinenz gemischt, der Manche blendet.«Da meinte nun der unverschämte Mensch, Sie erfüllten gewissenhaft Duclos Vorschriften, und der Erfolg habe Duclos Prophezeiungen entsprochen.

PETER jagt einem Schmetterling nach, den er endlich mit dem Hute erhascht. Aha! dich hab ich erwischt. Ei, der ist gewaltig schön, rot und blau und gelb. Er spießt ihn an eine Nadel und steckt ihn auf den Hut. Sapperlot! ich bin doch ein gescheiter Junge, wenngleich mein Vater immer spricht: dummer Peter! Der Peter ist aber gar nicht dumm. Da hat er seinen Hut aufgedonnert, daß jeder Bauerdirne das Herz im Leibe lachen wird. Der Vater will immer so gescheut sein, will immer alles besser wissen; bald red' ich zu viel, bald zu wenig, und wenn ich einmal mit mir selbst rede, so nennt er mich gar einen Narren: und ich rede doch am liebsten mit mir selbst, denn ich versteh' mich am besten; und ich selbst lache mich auch niemals aus, wie die andern wohl zu tun pflegen. Das Auslachen ist eine abscheulich ärgerliche Gewohnheit. Ja, wenn Madam Müller mich auslacht, das laß ich noch hingehn; die verzieht das Mäulchen dabei so süß und artig, daß man meint, sie lecke an einer Zuckerpuppe. Im Begriff zu gehn und wieder umkehrend. Ach potz Velten! da hätt' ich beinahe vergessen, warum ich kam. Nun ja, da wäre wieder auf meine Kosten gelacht worden. Er zieht einen Beutel heraus. Das Geld soll ich dem alten Tobies bringen, und Madam Müller hat mir befohlen, nicht ein Wörtchen davon auszuplaudern. Nun, nun, da kann sie ganz ruhig sein: aus meinem Munde kommt keine Silbe. Schön ist Madam Müller, sehr schön! aber dumm, entsetzlich dumm! denn mein Papa sagt: wer sein Geld vertut, der handelt unvernünftig; aber wer es gar verschenkt, den muß man je eher je lieber ins Tollhaus bringen.

BACULUS. Du hast deine liebe Sippschaft eingeladen, du willst hoch traktieren und meintest, ohne Wildbraten wäre der Schmaus nicht vornehm genug GRETCHEN. Nun ja, wofür heirate ich Ihn denn? Ich bin genug verspottet worden. Das junge hübsche Gretchen, sagten die Leute, und der alte häßliche Schulmeister BACULUS. Nu, nu GRETCHEN. Ich dachte, spottet ihr nur! Kann ich nur erst recht traktieren, so stimmt ihr ein andres Liedchen an, und ist vollends ein Rehbraten dabei, so platzt ihr alle vor Neid. BACULUS. Nun bin ich denn auf dein Begehren in der Dämmerung hinausgeschlichen und habe im Tiergarten des Herrn einen feisten Rehbock geschossen. GRETCHEN. Und ist dumm gewesen und hat sich ertappen lassen! BACULUS. Rede nicht so einfältig; ich bin ja doch kein Wilddieb von Profession, du hättest mich sollen stehen sehen mit dem Mordgewehr in der Hand. Siehst du, so stand ich da und überlegte, ob ich losdrücken sollte oder nicht; und das gute Tier, soviel ich in der Dämmerung erkennen konnte, stand so ruhig da, als ob es fragen wollte: »Ist das Nächstenliebe?« Bauz, da ging der Schuß los, und gleich darauf ich auch, weil ich jemand kommen hörte; am Ende des Tiergartens wurde ich erwischt, und ich glaubte bis jetzt noch gut weggekommen zu sein, daß ich nur die Flinte eingebüßt hatte.

Wenn ich es der Mühe wert halte, dem Publikum meine Begebenheiten in dem letztverflossenen Jahre mitzuteilen, so nenne man das nicht Eitelkeit. Mein Schicksal war so sonderbar, daß es schon als Roman interessieren würde; wie weit mehr als wahre Geschichte möge doch das Individuum, welches sie erlebte, heißen, wie es wolle. Mich bestimmen noch andre und wichtigere Gründe. Deutschland ja, ich darf sagen ein Teil von Europa hat sich, teils neugierig, teils wohlwollend, für mein Schicksal interessiert; überall hat man nach der Veranlassung desselben geforscht. Die auffallende Wirkung erzeugte ein Grübeln nach der Ursache. Man erfand hundert und wieder hundert Geschichten: bald sollte ich ein Buch geschrieben haben, das der eine Der weiße Bär, der andre Der nordische Bär nannte und das manche sogar gelesen haben wollten. Bald hieß es wieder, der Verfasser sei ein andrer, dessen Name mit eben den Anfangsbuchstaben wie der meinige bezeichnet werde, und ich sei daher das Opfer einer bloßen Namensverwechselung geworden. Andre suchten meine Schuld in unbesonnenen Reden, noch andre in Stellen gewisser Schauspiele, die ich schon zehn Jahre vorher geschrieben hatte. Kurz, der eine glaubte dies, der andre jenes; keiner aber fiel auf den eigentlichen Grund, der doch einzig und allein in einer argwöhnischen Laune des Augenblicks zu suchen war. Mich dünkt daher, ich bin es meinem Rufe, meinen Kindern und meinen Freunden schuldig, was mir begegnet ist, mit einfacher Wahrheit zu erzählen und so auf einmal alle Urteile zu berichtigen.
