Ja, das ist genug, wenn man die Wahrheit hören will, und wollte man sie nicht hören: so wäre auch das zu viel. Gut gearbeitet ein heit'rer Morgen das gibt Muth! Es bleibt dabei, heute breche ich die Bahn. Der alte Ruhberg ist ein gerader Mann ihm sage ich geradezu, was mir am Herzen liegt. Mein Vater ist heftig, aber er ist gut: also ohne Sorgen und Aengstlichkeit gerade zur Sache!

JAKOB schläft in einem Lehnstuhle. Das Nachtlicht brennt noch.HOFRATH tritt ein. Er sieht sich um, geht nach der Seite, bleibt vor der Thür unentschlossen stehen, kehrt zurück, will wieder gehen, sinnt nach, geht darauf zu Jakob, dem er auf die Schulter klopft. Jakob! Jakob! hört Er nicht? he!JAKOB springt auf. Ihr GnadenHOFRATH. Sei Er so gut undJAKOB halb wach. Wollen Sie zu Bett gehen? Den Augenblick Greift nach dem Nachtlichte.HOFRATH. Ein Mann, dessen Einsichten und Wünsche ich ehre, fordert mich auf, ein Lustspiel dieser Gattung zu schreiben. Ich fühle mich nicht dazu. Man macht mir Muth. Ich fange an; man scheint nicht unzufrieden; die Aufforderungen werden wiederholt so entstand dies Stück.»Warum ich F i g a r o wähle?«Weil wir ihm erlauben würden, überall zu Hause zu sein, wenn er unter uns erscheinen sollte.»Figaro ist aber anderwärts lustiger!«Ist es etwa überhaupt anderwärts lustiger, oder lachen wir williger über unsere Nachbarn? Uebrigens widerrathe ich das Stück den Direktoren, weil es lang ist. Das Publikum einer gesellschaftlichen Bühne ist nachsichtiger; darum, und da es auch ohne Theaterverwandlungen gegeben werden kann, empfehle ich es diesen.Manheim, den 1. Februar 1790. A.W. Iffland.
