Diese Absicht wird deutlich, wenn er bestimmte Kritikpunkte, die ihm Probleme bereiteten, wie die Gestalt Gottes und die Frage nach dem Dualismus von "Gut" und "Böse", ausführlich widerlegt. Das Gestehen seiner eigenen Schuld und die Verweise auf Gottes Gnade sollen dem Leser Hoffnung machen und ihn in seinem Streben, ein guter Christ zu sein, ermutigen. Augustinus von Hippo, auch: Augustinus von Thagaste, Augustin oder Aurelius Augustinus (354-430) war einer der vier lateinischen Kirchenlehrer der Spätantike und ein wichtiger Philosoph an der Epochenschwelle zwischen Antike und Mittelalter.
