Der Koptologe Carl Schmidt (1868 - 1938) wurde von der Kirchenväterkommission der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften mit der Veröffentlichung u. a. der "Pistis Sophia" im Rahmen der Publikationsreihe "Die griechischen christlichen Schriftsteller der ersten drei Jahrhunderte" beauftragt. Vorläufer der "Pistis Sophia" war das hier vorliegende Werk koptisch-gnostischer Schriften, das neben der "Pistis Sophia" noch "die beiden Bücher des Jeû" sowie ein "unbekanntes altgnostisches Werk" enthielt. Nachdruck der Originalausgabe aus dem Jahr 1905.
