  • - The Lewis & Clark Expedition through the Eyes of Their Forgotten Member
    av Catherine McGrew Jaime
    157

Now, in larger, easier to read print. The Lewis and Clark Expedition was filled with adventures and danger. Most of us know something of its travelers, almost all being familiar with Captain Meriwether Lewis, Captain William Clark, and Sacajawea. But one important member of the Expedition if often overlooked, Clark's slave York. This short story tells the tale of the Corps of Discovery from York's perspective. We join York as he shares the stories of his adventures with his grandchildren, in his cabin in Kentucky. While the setting is fictional, as well as the family he may or may not have ever had, the adventures he shares with them are based in history. From the Author's Note: "I hope you have enjoyed the story of York and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. When I started writing this book, I had been studying the Corps of Discovery for more than seven years. I always felt like York's story needed further telling. He was such an important part of the expedition, but sadly, so often gets little credit. I was able to find many more books on Sacagawea and Seaman than on York, which made me particularly sad. Most of the story you just read is historically accurate, based on many, many hours of research into the Corps of Discovery in general, and York's part in particular. With so many people tasked by President Jefferson to keep journals, it was a well-documented trip. And now with the power of the internet, those journals are readily accessible to anyone who wants to read them.I used the expression "proceeded on" as often as I did because it was a common phrase in many of those journals. Oftentimes, both Captains and at least one of the Sergeants would comment on something, and add "we proceeded on." It was clearly something that they all thought about often.Where I really took literary license was in my descriptions of York's family and his life after the expedition was completed. There is so much we don't know about that. We do know that he was married before he left to go west, that he moved to St. Louis with Captain Clark two years after the expedition finished; and that Captain Clark took ten years after their return to civilization before finally granting him his freedom.Beyond that, my research only turned up scarce and often contradictory mentions of York for those latter years. So this story is the way I would like to think that his life turned out, but it is highly unlikely that we will ever know for sure.In this book, I hoped to bring honor to York and his role in the expedition - honor that was seriously lacking in his lifetime."

  • - The Last Supper
    av Catherine McGrew Jaime
    167

When we think of the Last Supper and art, we often think immediately of Leonardo da Vinci. But the Last Supper has actually been the subject of paintings by artists for many centuries. Here is a collection of more than three dozen versions of the Last Supper - many by well-known artists (such as Peter Paul Rubens and, of course, Leonardo da Vinci), and many by lesser-known artists. As with the other books in the "Enjoying Great Art" series, this book is a pictorial journey for adults and students of all ages. Words are kept to a minimum - with an introduction to the book, and then artists and dates for each painting. For more details on Leonardo's famous version, you may also be interested in Catherine's "Exploring Da Vinci's Last Supper."

  • - Cappadocia, Shkodra, Wuerzburg
    av Catherine McGrew Jaime
    157

Now, in larger print - easier on younger eyes and older eyes! What do Cappadocia, Shkodra, and Wuerzburg have in common? Across the miles and through the ages they have been the site of attacks: during invasions and during battles. We often think of those attacks in terms of the total number of people injured and killed and the amount of property damage done. But we often lose track of the individuals who go through the attacks - the individuals on both sides, soldiers and civilians alike. These three short stories look at historic attacks in Cappadocia, Turkey, Shkodra, Albania, and Wuerzburg, Germany through the eyes of a mother, children, a priest, soldiers, and more.Early reviewers said of the Cappadocia tale: "Great story of faith and courage! I really enjoyed it."

  • - Civil Rights in Alabama
    av Catherine McGrew Jaime
    157

New edition - with larger print, easier on young and older eyes! The Civil Rights fight has taken place in many states across the county, particularly in the South; but this little book looks at some of the key events that took place within the boundaries of Alabama...From the "Scottsboro Boys" to the Tuskegee Airmen, Freedom Riders, and the girls murdered at the Sixteen Street Baptist Church...From Rosa Parks to Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and Governor George Washington...These are some of the people who helped shape the Civil Rights movement in and out of Alabama. Obviously a book this size cannot be an extensive look at these important people and important events, but the hope is to bring them to the forefront, so that readers are motivated to learn more.

Much has happened in the history of our country as the races have struggled through how to relate to each other. Some of it has been good - much of it has been very sad. I have not attempted to chronicle everything along the road to equity between the races - but to try to hit the high and low points along that path. As I conducted this study, several different categories of events seemed to jump out at me: "Society", "Government", "Military", and "Sports". These categories are by no means exhaustive, or exclusive. I arranged the various events in one or more of these categories in an attempt to more clearly show what happened.

Now in large print - easier to read for students and adults. The current state of affairs has been called a "financial tsunami", a "financial ice age", and "the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression". Our first question needs to be, "Is it?" Our next question might be, "How did we get here?" As someone who enjoys the study of both history and economics, I see these questions as both important and interlinked! I put this brief annotated time-line together initially for my own study, and to share with my students. I soon found that many others around me were asking similar questions and looking for the same information. This book was researched and written initially during the fall of 2008, as the current crisis first came to our attention. It was updated again in December 2009. It is written by a fiscal conservative, and it is intentionally kept brief.

The "Corps of Discovery" went places no white men had ever been, encountered countless Indian tribes that Easterners had only heard rumors about, and "discovered" plants and animals never before dreamed of by Americans or Europeans. It was a military expedition, with much of the usual military protocol and discipline. But it was also very unusual for a military expedition - there were two commanders instead of one. And they were accompanied by many civilians along the way - including one slave, various Frenchmen, occasional Indian scouts, and an Indian woman and her newborn son. This is a brief introduction to that unusual journey.

Whether you are just considering homeschooling, are a frustrated beginner or a veteran in danger of burning out, Organized Ramblings will encourage you in your journey. So what makes the new international version different? From the Introduction: "In the summer of 2011 I traveled to Albania to hold my first granddaughter. While there I had the great joy of being asked to speak about my homeschooling experiences and philosophies to a group of homeschool moms, both Albanian and American. When I shared with those women I realized that while much of what I wrote more than thirteen years ago in the original Organized Ramblings transcended country and cultural boundaries, some of it was from a very US-perspective. I have attempted here, in this International Version of the book, to maintain the original setup and flavor of the book, while at the same time modifying some of my 'Americanisms.'"
