Una de sus vecinas, señora de rango, tenía dos hijas muy hermosas. Pidiole una en matrimonio, dejando a la madre la elección de la que había de ser su esposa. Ninguna de las jóvenes quería casar con él y cada cual lo endosaba a la otra, sin que la otra ni la una se resolvieran a ser la mujer de un hombre que tenía la barba azul. Además, aumentaba su disgusto el hecho de que había casado con varias mujeres y nadie sabía lo que de ellas había sido. Barba Azul, para trabar con ellas relaciones, llevolas con su madre, tres o cuatro amigos íntimos y algunas jóvenes de la vecindad a una de sus casas de campo en la que permanecieron ocho días completos, que emplearon en paseos, partidos de caza y pesca, bailes y tertulias, sin dormir apenas y pasando las noches en decir chistes. Tan agradablemente se deslizó el tiempo, que a la menor pareciole que el dueño de casa no tenía la barba azul y que era un hombre muy bueno; y al regresar a la ciudad celebraron la boda.

Hans nedskrivna berättelser var baserade på europeiska myter och traditioner, som tidigare endast hade berättats genom folkmun. Hans mest kända sagor lever vidare och fortsätter att tolkas än idag genom litteratur, film och teater.

Als sie durch einen Wald kam, begegnete ihr der Gevatter Wolf, der große Lust hatte, sie zu fressen; aber er wagte es nicht wegen der Holzhauer, die in dem Walde waren. Er fragte sie, wohin sie gehe. Das arme Kind, das nicht wußte, wie gefährlich es ist, einen Wolf anzuhören, sagte: »Ich gehe meine Großmutter besuchen und bringe ihr Kuchen und einen Topf Butter, den ihr meine Mutter schickt.« »Wohnt sie weit von hier?« fragte der Wolf. »Oh ja,« antwortete das Rotkäppchen, »noch hinter der Mühle, die Ihr dort in der Ferne seht, in dem ersten Hause des Dorfes.« »Wohlan,« sagte der Wolf, »ich will sie auch besuchen; ich gehe auf diesem Wege hin und du dort auf jenem, wir wollen sehen, wer zuerst da ist.« Der Wolf lief so schnell er konnte und schlug den kürzeren Weg ein, und das kleine Mädchen ging den weiteren Weg; fröhlich pflückte sie Haselnüsse, lief den Schmetterlingen nach und machte Sträuße aus den Blümlein, die sie fand. Es dauerte nicht lange, da war der Wolf an Großmutter Haus angelangt, und er pochte an die Tür: Bum! Bum! »Wer ist da?« »Euer Enkelchen ist es, das Rotkäppchen,« sagte der Wolf, indem er seine Stimme verstellte, »ich bringe Euch einen Kuchen und ein Töpfchen mit Butter, das Euch meine Mutter schickt.« Die gute Großmutter, die krank in ihrem Bette lag, rief ihm zu: »Zieh den Riegel zurück, dann springt das Schloß auf!« Der Wolf zog den Riegel zurück, und die Tür öffnete sich.
