Despite opposition from outside religious and commercial interests and even dissension within the church, the gospel progressed and people will come to Christ. Embark on a daily journey through the book of Acts and see how the Holy Spirit empowers the church to witness until the gospel reaches the ends of the earth in ever-widening circles. The Journey Through the bible series provides assistance to those who desire to spend time with God in His Word, book by book. A detailed study on the nature of Muslim apocalyptic material in Islam, both Sunnī and Shīʿī. Taking a transcultural perspective by also discussing Christian and Jewish apocalyptic traditions, it offers in eight studies and three appendices a typology of apocalypses and many new insights into the matter. For instance, historical apocalypses as well as apocalyptic figures, like the Dajjāl, the Sufyānī and the Mahdī are discussed. Moreover, apocalyptic ḥadīth literature, in particular Nuʿaym b. Ḥammād's (d. 844) Kitāb al-Fitan, and apocalyptic material in tafsīr works are presented. The author argues for a comprehensive understanding of this important feature of the Islamic religious tradition. ... a reference tool and a starting point for students in their study of early Islam (Sajjad Rizvi)

Jihad is one of the most loaded and misunderstood terms in the news today. Contrary to popular understanding, the term does not mean "e;holy war."e; Nor does it simply refer to the inner spiritual struggle. This book, judiciously balanced, accessibly written, and highly relevant to today's events, unravels the tangled historical, intellectual, and political meanings of jihad. Looking closely at a range of sources from sacred Islamic texts to modern interpretations, Understanding Jihad opens a critically important perspective on the role of Islam in the contemporary world. As David Cook traces the practical and theoretical meanings of jihad, he cites from scriptural, legal, and newly translated texts to give readers a taste of the often ambiguous information that is used to construct Islamic doctrine. He looks closely at the life and teaching of the Prophet Muhammad and at the ramifications of the great Islamic conquests in 634 to 732 A.D. He sheds light on legal developments relevant to fighting and warfare, and places the internal, spiritual jihad within the larger context of Islamic religion. He describes some of the conflicts that occur in radical groups and shows how the more mainstream supporters of these groups have come to understand and justify violence. He has also included a special appendix of relevant documents including materials related to the September 11 attacks and published manifestoes issued by Osama bin Laden and Palestinian suicide-martyrs.

"e;I wrote this book because I love building robots. I want you to love building robots, too. It took me a while to learn about many of the tools and parts in amateur robotics. Perhaps by writing about my experiences, I can give you a head start."e;--David CookRobot Building for Beginners, Third Edition provides basic, practical knowledge on getting started in amateur robotics. There is a mix of content: from serious reference tables and descriptions to personal stories and humorous bits. The robot described and built in this book is battery powered and about the size of a lunch box. It is autonomous; that is, it isn't remote controlled. The book is broken up into small chapters, suitable for bedtime (or bathroom) reading. The characteristics and purposes of each major component (resistor, transistor, wire, and motor) are described, followed by a hands-on experiment to demonstrate. Not only does this help the reader to understand a particular piece, but it also prepares them with processes to learn new parts on their own. An appendix offers an introduction to 3D printing and parts of the robot can, as an alternative, be "e;printed"e; using a 3D printer. The master project of the book is a simple, entertaining, line-following robot.

In recent times Islamic martyrdom has become associated with suicide missions conducted by extremists. However, as David Cook demonstrates, this type of martyrdom is very different from the classical definition which condemned suicide and stipulated that anyone who died a believer could be considered a martyr. Ideas about martyrdom have evolved to suit prevailing circumstances, and it is the evolution of these interpretations that Cook charts in this fascinating history. The book covers the earliest sources on martyrdom including those from the Jewish and Christian traditions, discussions about what constituted martyrdom, and differences in attitudes between Sunnis and Shi'ites. A concluding section discusses martyrdom in today's radical environment. There is no other book which considers the topic so systematically, and which draws so widely on the literary sources. This will be essential reading for students of Islamic history, and for those looking for an informed account of this controversial topic.

That which once consumed us will, in turn, have to sustain us. When God turns the captivity around, that which held us will become our servant. He will cause those devastations to become the force of strength to propel us forward into His plans and purposes. It will become our testimony!RESTORED: From Failure to Faith and Freedom lays out just such a journey. I pray that this account of my falling away and subsequent restoration will encourage you as you press toward restoration in your own life.God is truly an amazing wonder-worker. As we turn our hearts toward Him, He opens the portals of Heaven and turns those circumstances that held us bound into a testimony of His love and restoring power. What He did for me, He will surely do for you!

Anyone who reads one of the four Gospels is bound to ask the question - What happened next? With Jesus Christ crucified, resurrected and ascended into Heaven we are left with a few men who not so long before scattered to the wind at the first sign of trouble. How did these men, with the help of the Holy Spirit, establish Christ's Church and begin spreading the Gospel? The book of Acts tells this story and this book will be a helpful introduction, giving you a good start in understanding the message it contains. Designed to accompany the more extensive Teaching Acts also by David Cook, this short book will not take long to read, but will be a great help to all those seeking to better understand the book of Acts.

Communication is such a vital part of today's world - we are bombarded with thousands of media-transferred messages every day. But with thousands of messages comes confusion. Clarity when talking of ideas and concepts are rare. Public speaking, as exemplified by politicians, has become the science of sound bites for that 5-second media slot. Communication in today's society is not equipping us for public speaking. Christianity communicates ideas that need to be thought through, contemplated and reflected upon. Christians use words because God uses words. He is interested in verbal and written communication. He communicates ideas about himself primarily to us in his written word, the Bible. So if you are faced with an event or occasion when public speaking is needed you may find yourself in need of a helping hand. How to speak at special events can help - because it is written by experts in their field. But before you can prepare an effective talk, you have to prepare yourself and your material. It's not just a case of throwing some jokes and Bible stories together and hoping. How to speak at special events will guide you step-by-step along the way. If you want to make an effective impact at a special event then you need How to speak at special events. Although apocalyptic visions and predictions have been part of contemporary Islam, this work covers this disparate but influential body of writing. It suggests that Islam began as an apocalyptic movement and has retained an apocalyptic and messianic tone.
