As soon as human beings developed a tendency to acknowledge God orthe gods for the creation of the world and humanity itself, they developed asensation of being protected by The Almighty. The inception of espionage seemsto have an intimate link with this feeling of being protected. In order to protect,God has to 'watch' or 'see' his creation constantly. The notion of God (or gods, incase of polytheistic religions) being a permanent resident of heaven, that is, aplace located above the earth too bears a reflection of this idea about God beingthe watchman for the entire creation. Though myths or religious texts fromnumerous cultures and religions bear such ideas, keeping in mind, the presentdiscussion's focus on Anglo-American literature, it seems proper to trace echoesof the ideas in Christianity due to the dominance of Christianity on the Anglo-American culture.
