En septiembre de 1842, cuando todavía no dan paso las nieves que se acumulan durante el invierno sobre la areta central de los Andes, un grupo de viajeros pretendía desde Chile atravesar aquellas blancas soledades, en que valles de nieve conducen a crestas colosales de granito que es preciso escalar a pie, apoyándose en un báculo, evitando hundirse en abismos que cavan ríos corriendo a muchas varas debajo; y con los pies forrados en pieles, a fin de preservarse del contacto de la nieve que, deteniendo la sangre, mata localmente los músculos haciendo fatales quemaduras.Los Penitentes ; columnas y agujas de nieve que forma el desigual deshielo, según que el aire o el sol hieren con más intensidad, decoran la escena, y embarazan el paso cual escombros y trozos de columnas de ruinas de gigantescos palacios de mármol. Los declives que el débil calor del sol no ataca, ofrecen planos más o menos inclinados, según la montaña que cubren, y descenso cómodo y lleno de novedad al viajero, que sentado se deja llevar por la gravitación, recorriendo a veces en segundos distancias de miles de varas. Este es quizá el único placer que permite aquella escena, en que lo blanco del paisaje sólo es accidentado por algunos negros picos demasiado perpendiculares para que la nieve se sostenga en sus flancos, formando contraste con el cielo azul-oscuro de las grandes alturas.
