Der Klassische Philologe Eduard Norden (1868 - 1941), einer der bedeutendsten Altertumsforscher seiner Zeit, beschreibt in der Einleitung Ansatzpunkt und Ziel des hier vorliegenden Werks folgendermaßen: "Ihr Ausgangspunkt war ein denkbar unansehn­licher: der Versuch grammatischer Deutung eines einzigen Satzes. Die Ergebnisse sind jetzt weit vom Anfange, erst in Kap. V niedergelegt worden. Alles, was vorangeht, dient in der Hauptsache nur der Er­füllung dieser Aufgabe. Aber in diesem ersten, vorbereitenden Teile (Kap. 1-IV) wird zugleich versucht werden, für das figurenreiche Bild der Germania den passenden Rahmen zu finden und der Ent­stehungsart dieses Bildes durch Eindringen in die Voraussetzungen seines Werdens nachzugehen. Im dritten Teile (Kap. VI) soll dann das so gewonnene Verständnis jenes einen Satzes ethnologisch aus­gewertet werden." Nachdruck der Originalausgabe aus dem Jahr 1920.

Diese 1896 begrundete Reihe erfasst seltene griechische und lateinische Texte mit Ubersetzungen und Kommentaren sowie ausfuhrliche Einleitungen und macht sie einem weiteren wissenschaftlichen Publikum zuganglich. Als Schwerpunkt der Reihe gilt seit 2000 "e;Homers Ilias. Gesamtkommentar"e;; hier wird Homers Ilias im Text (von M. L. West) mit Ubersetzung (von J. Latacz) und mit Kommentar in deutscher Sprache geboten.

Nordens knappe Ubersichten uber die Geschichte der romischen Literatur und uber ihre Schicksale beim Ubergang vom Altertum zum Mittelalter sind wiederholt nachgedruckt worden. Seine Darstellung ist in ihrer scharfen Ausrichtung auf die Gattungsgeschichte, in ihrer weitausgreifenden Verzahnung mit griechischem Geistesgut und in ihrer pragnanten Fixierung teils individueller, teils genusbedingter Phanomene ein Muster literarkritischer Analyse. Die neue siebente Auflage beruht auf der magebenden dritten Auflage. Dieser Neudruck ist wieder durch den Abschnitt -Gesichtspunkte und Probleme- der Erstauflage erganzt. - Die bibliographischen Erganzungen Nordens wurden durch neue Textausgaben und Forschungsberichte erweitert, ebenso erweitert sind die beiden Register der letzten Auflage, denen noch ein Index griechischer Termini beigefugt worden ist.
