Nachstehender Brief ward eigentlich von dem Verfasser nicht zum Druck bestimmt, sondern sollte auf der Post dem Manne zugeschickt werden, an den er hauptsächlich gerichtet ist. Aber auch dieses geschah nicht, und der Verfasser begnügte sich bloß denselben einigen Freunden vorzulesen, unter deren Anzahl sich der Herausgeber befindet, lauter Personen, denen Göbhards Schmähschrift bekannt war. Da aber der Göbharde, zum großen Nachteil der Schriftsteller sowohl als der ehrlichen Buchhändler, mehr sind, als man glauben sollte, und dieser Brief einige derbe Wahrheiten gerade in dem Ton gesagt enthält, den dieses Gesindel allein versteht, das übrigens als vogelfrei für die Schriftsteller keiner Achtung und Schonung wert ist: so glaubt der Herausgeber weder den Unwillen des Verfassers noch den Undank des Publikums zu verdienen, wenn er ihn auf diese Art nicht an Einen Göbhard, sondern an alle gelangen läßt.

Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799) war ein Mathematiker und der erste deutsche Professor für Experimentalphysik. Lichtenberg gilt als Begründer des deutschsprachigen Aphorismus. Über viele Jahre hat Lichtenberg ab 1764 in Schreibheften, von ihm selbstironisch "Sudelbücher" genannt, in aphoristischer Form unzählige Gedankensplitter (spontane Einfälle, Lesefrüchte, Reflexionen zu fast allen Wissensgebieten und naturwissenschaftliche Feststellungen) notiert, die postum veröffentlicht wurden. Sie belegen seine Aufgeschlossenheit für alles Neue, die enzyklopädische Weite seines Geistes und in besonderer Weise seine Fähigkeit zur skeptischen Beobachtung und ironischen Formulierung. Aus dem Buch: "Der große Kunstgriff, kleine Abweichungen von der Wahrheit für die Wahrheit selbst zu halten, worauf die ganze Differential-Rechnung gebaut ist, ist auch zugleich der Grund unsrer witzigen Gedanken, wo oft das Ganze hinfallen würde, wenn wir die Abweichungen in einer philosophischen Strenge nehmen würden. Es ist eine Frage ob in den Wissenschaften und Künsten ein Bestes möglich sei, über welches unser Verstand nicht gehen kann. Vielleicht ist dieser Punkt unendlich weit entfernt, ohnerachtet bei jeder Näherung wir weniger vor uns haben."
