The proceedings of this conference, held in the Lombardy region, dictate the guidelines for wide-ranging work on underground architecture. They offer a perspective for carrying out precise mapping of urban and extra-urban underground areas. It can be used by public administrations in terms of security, infrastructure design and planning, upgrading of ducts and underground channels, public hygiene, and territorial marketing. Having a picture of the world beneath our feet allows us to use this economic and environmental resource for social and national ends. The underground works are a cultural asset and a real underground resource for the circular economy. The primary management tool is the census of subsoil assets through the Cadastre of Artificial Cavities.

Between 1988 and 2000 a pot-holing project undertook an underground survey of the city of Tarquinia in Italy. This report comprises a catalogue of the man-made cavities that it found along with a discussion of methodology and an analysis of its findings from the Etruscan, Roman and medieval periods.

Il Castello di Milano è un'opera medievale voluta dai Visconti e potenziata dagli Sforza. Oggi è sede di biblioteche, musei e raccolte d'arte, ma rimane una formidabile "macchina da combattimento", dove hanno lavorato tra i migliori architetti e ingegneri italiani. I soli studi d'epoca medievale riguardanti la Fortezza, a oggi noti, sono di Leonardo da Vinci, il quale ne ha esaminato le difese, comprensive delle parti sotterranee, prospettando i miglioramenti. Trent'anni d'indagini speleologiche condotte innanzitutto nei suoi sotterranei hanno permesso di eseguire le planimetrie dell'articolato sistema, composto anche di canali d'acqua segreti, mettendole a confronto con i disegni leonardeschi. Si è così compreso che una parte della Fortezza non è stata demolita, ma solo "cimata": oggi nel sottosuolo esiste un patrimonio archeologico, architettonico e artistico inestimabile, ma da recuperare integralmente. Il lavoro presenta un metodo d'indagine multidisciplinare che può essere facilmente applicato allo studio di ogni altra fortificazione europea. The castle of Milan is a medieval work commissioned by the Visconti and developed by the Sforza. Today it is intended for cultural functions but its origins are those of a formidable "combat machine". Some of the best Italian architects and engineers worked on the creation of the castle. The only studies known about the fortress, belonging to the medieval age, are by Leonardo da Vinci. He examined the defences, including the underground parts, looking for improvements. Thirty years of speleological investigations, first of all conducted in its basements, and also concerning secret water channels, have allowed us to carry out the plans of the complex system and to compare them with Leonardo's drawings. This has made it clear to the author that a part of the Fortress has not been demolished, but only "cut" in the surface. Today there is an invaluable archaeological, architectural and artistic heritage to be fully recovered. The work presents a method of multidisciplinary investigation that can be applied to the study of any other European fortification.

Hypogean Archaeology No 10Il decimo libro della serie Hypogean Archaeology è dedicato alla storia dell'Acquedotto Civico di Milano (costruito a partire dal 1889) e alle architetture per l'acqua prelevata dal sottosuolo: i pozzi e le stazioni di pompaggio. L'acqua, elemento fondamentale per la vita, ha richiesto fin dall'antichità la creazione di sistemi per captarla e condurla nelle aree abitate. Il testo offre al lettore diversi spunti di riflessione per cogliere l'importanza di questo elemento e per conoscere le architetture adottate per la sua presa dalle falde acquifere profonde. Abbiamo inoltre esempi italiani di pozzi ordinari e di acquedotti antichi studiati e rilevati dalla Federazione Nazionale Cavità Artificiali (F.N.C.A.). Non mancano riferimenti a testi classici (Cesare Cesariano, Sesto Giulio Frontino, Vitruvio e altri) che tracciano un "percorso" di Archeologia dell'Acqua e introducono l'argomento principale.The tenth volume of the Hypogean Archaeology subseries is dedicated to the history of the Civic Aqueduct of Milan (built starting in 1889) and to those architectures designed to draw water from the subsoil: wells and groundwater pumping stations. Water, the fundamental element of life, has since ancient times demanded the creation of systems to capture it and lead it to habited areas. The text offers the reader various cues for thought for understanding the importance of this element and to know the architectures adopted for its grip from the deep aquifers. Furthermore, it presents Italian examples of ordinary wells and ancient aqueducts studied and surveyed by the National Federation of Artificial Cavities (F.N.C.A.), together with a wealth of references to classical texts (Cesare Cesariano, Frontinus, Vitruvius and others) that, trace the 'path' of Water Archaeology, and introduces the main topic.
