Avrei voluto tenere esclusivamente per me questo inizio di lavoro, e seguitare da sola su esso il mio segreto pianto. Triste il convito senza canto, come tempio senza votivo oro di doni; ché questo è bello: attendere al cantore che nella voce ha l'eco dell'Ignoto. Oh! nulla, io dico, è bello più, che udire un buon cantore, placidi, seduti l'un presso l'altro, avanti mense piene di pani biondi e di fumanti carni, mentre il fanciullo dal cratere attinge vino, e lo porta e versa nelle coppe;

Io sono una lampada ch'arda soave! la lampada, forse, che guarda, pendendo alla fumida trave, la veglia che fila; e ascolta novelle e ragioni da bocche celate nell'ombra, ai cantoni, là dietro le soffici rócche che albeggiano in fila: ragioni, novelle, e saluti d'amore, all'orecchio, confusi: gli assidui bisbigli perduti nel sibilo assiduo dei fusi;

Conoscere e descrivere la mente di Dante sarà mai possibile? Egli eclissa nella profondità del suo pensiero: volontariamente eclissa. Io già mi posi in cuore di seguirlo in una di queste sparizioni, nella quale, dopo aver detto, Mirate, egli lascia i nostri occhi in mezzo alla caligine. Se vedo questa volta, io dicevo, vedrò sempre, se lo comprendo in questa parte, lo comprenderò nel resto.

Dark Minerva by Giovanni Pascoli was first published in 1898. (The original title in Italian is Minerva Oscura.) It is an impassioned, often poetic, but also scholarly and critical investigation into Dante Alighieri¿s Divine Comedy. As Pascoli says in the Prolegomena, "To know and to describe Dante¿s thought, will it ever be possible? He eclipses in the profundity of his thought: he intentionally eclipses. I have already set my heart on following him in one of those disappearances in which, after having said ¿Look,¿ he immediately leaves us in the dark. This time I said to myself, if I see, I will always see; if I understand him in this place, I will understand him everywhere else."Giovanni Pascoli (AD 1855-1912) was a poet and Italian classical scholar, fluent in Greek, Latin, Italian and also English. He was a student of Giosuè Carducci, the Italian classicist poet and Nobel prize winner.
