Gustaf Dalman, 1855 im sächsischen Niesky geboren, folgte nach seiner theologischen Ausbildung einem Ruf an das Insitutum Judaicum in Leipzig, wo er zunächst als Privatdozent, später als außerordentlicher Professor für Altes Testament und Judaistik lehrte. Im Jahre 1902 nahm Dalman als Direktor den Vorsitz des Deutschen Evangelischen Instituts für Altertumswissenschaft des heiligen Landes in Jerusalem an. In seinen Büchern dokumentierte Dalman detailliert das alltägliche Leben der Bewohner des damaligen Palästinas und verfasste zahlreiche Dialektproben und Wörterbücher der Region. Seine Schriften sind unschätzbare Sammlungen der Geschichte und Kultur des alten Orients.
