Schwabs Ziel war die Nacherzählung "der schönsten und bedeutungsvollsten Sagen des klassischen Altertums" in schlichter Prosa, die dem Wortlaut der antiken Schriftsteller möglichst nahekommen sollte. Die Sammlung gilt als Klassiker der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur.
