Die Zeit, da Fechners philosophische Schriften zuerst in die Öffentlichkeit traten, war für ihre Wirkung die denkbar ungünstigste. Als die drei Bände des ¿Zendavestä, dieser umfassendsten Darstellung seiner Anschauungen, im Jahre 1851 erschienen, beherrschten ganz andere Interessen die wissenschaftliche Welt. Die Naturphilosophie hatte gründlich Fiasko gemacht, auch der Stern der Hegelschen Philosophie war verblichen; der Pessimist Schopenhauer harrte in Frankfurt noch immer vergebens der Wiederauferstehung seines vergessenen Werkes, an die damals außer ihm niemand glaubte. Ludwig Feuerbach und in den folgenden Jahren der in seinen Spuren wandelnde physiologische Materialismus kamen dem populären philosophischen Bedürfnisse entgegen, während sich die strengere Wissenschaft auf ihre Spezialgebiete zurückzog und die Philosophie überhaupt meist für einen überwundenen Standpunkt ansah. Wie konnte da ein Werk, das sich schon auf dem Titel als eine Lehre von den Dingen des Himmels und des Jenseits ankündigte, als etwas anderes denn als ein phantastischer Traum erscheinen, der mit Wissenschaft überhaupt nichts zu tun habe! Fechner hat schwer unter dieser Ungunst der Zeiten gelitten. Er ist nicht müde geworden, die Überzeugungen, die er gewonnen und durch die er sich beglückt fühlte, immer wieder in neuer Gestalt der Welt zu verkünden. Dem ¿Zendavestä ließ er kleinere Schriften folgen, in der Hoffnung, daß die kürzere Form der Verbreitung seiner Gedanken förderlicher sei. In dem Vorwort zu der Schrift ¿Über die Seelenfrage¿ sagt er: Einem Publikum, das sich durchaus nicht aus dem Bette alter Ansichten zurechtfinden könne, habe er zum erstenmal in seinem ¿Büchlein vom Leben nach dem Tode¿ zugerufen: ¿Steh auf!¿ Als man ihn nicht gehört, da habe er wieder und wieder gesprochen: ¿Steh auf!¿ ¿Jetzt rufe ich ein fünftes Mal, und, wenn ich lebe, werde ich noch ein sechstes und siebentes Mal ¿Steh auf!¿ rufen, und immer wird es nur dasselbe ¿Steh auf!¿ sein. Aber zum Rufe, der eine schlafende Welt aufwecken soll, gehört ein starker Atem; ich bin nur ein Atemzug in diesem Atem.¿
