    On a donné hier soir Don Juan à l'Opéra. Je ne viens pas en faire l'analyse. Dieu m'en garde! Trop de savants critiques, musiciens, poètes, ou à la fois poètes et musiciens (comme Hoffmann par exemple) se sont exercés sur ce vaste sujet, de manière à ne rien laisser à glaner après eux. Je me bornerai à émettre quelques idées générales à propos de cette étonnante production toujours jeune, toujours forte, toujours à l'avant-garde de la civilisation musicale, lorsque tant d'autres, dont l'âge n'égale pas la moitié du sien, gisent déjà, cadavres oubliés dans les fossés du chemin, ou mendient des suffrages d'une voix cassée qu'on écoute à peine. Quand Mozart l'écrivit, il n'ignorait pas que le succès d'une ¿uvre pareille serait lent, et que peut-être même il ne serait pas donné à l'auteur de le voir. Il disait souvent, en parlant de Don Juan: «Je l'ai fait pour moi et quelques amis.» Mozart avait raison de n'espérer que l'admiration du petit nombre de musiciens avancés de son époque. La froideur de la masse du public devant le monument musical qu'il venait d'élever le prouva bien. Aujourd'hui même, si la supériorité de Mozart ne trouve pas en France de contradicteurs, c'est moins dans un sentiment réel du peuple dilettante qu'il en faut voir la cause, que dans l'influence exercée sur lui par l'opinion constamment la même des artistes distingués de toutes les nations; opinion qui a fini par passer dans l'esprit de la foule comme un dogme religieux sur lequel la controverse n'est point permise, et dont il serait criminel de douter.

    MUSIQUE, art d'émouvoir par des combinaisons de sons les hommes intelligents et doués d'organes spéciaux et exercés. Définir ainsi la musique, c'est avouer que nous ne la croyons pas, comme on dit, faite pour tout le monde. Quelles que soient en effet ses conditions d'existence, quels qu'aient jamais été ses moyens d'action, simples ou composés, doux ou énergiques, il a toujours paru évident à l'observateur impartial qu'un grand nombre d'individus ne pouvant ressentir ni comprendre sa puissance, ceux-là n'étaient pas faits pour elle, et que par conséquent elle n'était point faite pour eux.La musique est à la fois un sentiment et une science; elle exige de la part de celui qui la cultive, exécutant ou compositeur, une inspiration naturelle et des connaissances qui ne s'acquièrent que par de longues études et de profondes méditations. La réunion du savoir et de l'inspiration constitue l'art. En dehors de ces conditions, le musicien ne sera donc qu'un artiste incomplet, si tant est qu'il mérite le nom d'artiste. La grande question de la prééminence de l'organisation sans étude sur l'étude sans organisation, qu'Horace n'a pas osé résoudre positivement pour les poëtes, nous paraît également difficile à trancher pour les musiciens. On a vu quelques hommes parfaitement étrangers à la science produire d'instinct des airs gracieux et même sublimes, témoin Rouget de l'Isle et son immortelle Marseillaise; mais ces rares éclairs d'inspiration n'illuminant qu'une partie de l'art, pendant que les autres, non moins importantes, demeurent obscures, il s'ensuit, eu égard à la nature complexe de notre musique, que ces hommes en définitive ne peuvent être rangés parmi les musiciens: ILS NE SAVENT PAS.
