    Henrik Pontoppidan (Author) Henrik Pontoppidan (1857¿1943) was a Danish novelist who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1917 for his 'authentic descriptions of present-day life in Denmark'. The son of a rural minister, he moved to Copenhagen as a young man and eventually earned his living as a journalist and writer. He is best known for the sweeping social novels he wrote between 1890 and the 1920s, which 'reflect the social, religious and political struggles of the time.'Naomi Lebowitz (Translator) Naomi Lebowitz is Professor Emerita of English and Comparative Literature at Washington University in St Louis and the author of books on Ibsen, Kierkegaard and Svevo.

    Henrik Pontoppidan giver i seks noveller et trøstesløst billede af husmandsklassens elendige sociale forhold i 1880'ernes Danmark. Druk, fattigdom og håbløshed er den daglige følgesvend. Vi hører om det fattige barn, der begraves uden større dikkedarer, og vi møder den gamle kone, som brutalt bliver kastet på fattiggården. For andre går det egentlig den rigtige vej, men så kommer den brutale død, en uønsket graviditet eller bristede håb og ødelægger det hele. Novellerne i denne samling er blevet betegnet som Pontoppidans bedste husmandshistorier.

    Henrik Pontoppidan giver i fem forunderlige noveller et skarpt billede af en lang række sociale forhold i Danmark omkring 1880. Vi møder de fattige husmænd, de rige gårdejere, og præsterne som er noget for sig. Mest forunderlig er måske historien om to forskellige strandinger. De sker med mange års mellemrum, men ligheden er i grunden ganske forfærdelig. Ved den sidste stranding befinder vi os endda i det, som Pontoppidan et andet sted kalder for fremskridtets og humanitetens århundrede.
