Oft um Weihnachten schon geschieht es mir, daß ich, auf dem Semmering vom Doppelreiter zum Wolfsbergkogel rodelnd, plötzlich das Meer sehe, das blaue Meer. Nur einen Moment lang. Der Wind schneit mich an, die Nadeln zergehen, mich wässert in den Augen; und indem ich sie schließen muß, begibt es sich, daß ich das blaue Meer sehe. Die Lider, fest vor dem stechenden Schnee zugepreßt, lassen mich das blaue Meer sehen. Nur einen Moment lang. Schon bin ich wieder wach und erblicke den Eselstein, drüben vor mir, im wogenden Grau. Das blaue Meer haben mir bloß meine Lider vorgeträumt. Nur einen Moment lang. Aber diesen war es in mir da. Und mitten im neblichten Dampf und stachligen Schnee weiß ich jetzt plötzlich wieder, daß irgendwo das blaue Meer ist. Und während ich dann, von der Station den weich verschneiten Berg hinauf, schnaufend meine Rodel schleppe, sagt alles in mir: Blau, blau, blau! Das ist mir wie ein magisches Wort, das alle Sehnsucht stillen kann. Und abends dann, im winterlichen Behagen frottierter Füße in frischen Strümpfen, wenn im Kamin die großen Scheite krachen und ihre roten Zungen zeigen, verfolgt es mich. Immer mit denselben beiden Bildern: ich sehe mich in Mattuglie aus dem Zug steigen und vor mir liegt in der Sonne das blaue Meer da, bis zur Insel Cherso hin; oder ich bin über San Giacomo, auf der weißen Straße nach Trebinje, und unten ist das blaue Meer und drüben das immergrüne Lakroma und dann wieder das blaue Meer und überall das blaue Meer, jauchzend in der Sonne. Immer diese zwei Bilder sind dann bei mir, zum Greifen leibhaft vor mir da. Bis ein großes Scheit prasselnd einbricht und mich aufschreckt: das Gesicht zerrinnt, zum Fenster sehen die stillen alten Fichten herein, in ihren weißen Mänteln.

»O Mensch!« sagte Fräulein Annalis, dem Diener zur Antwort. Aber dann besann sie sich auf die Vorschrift des Magiers, trat ans Fenster, kehrte sich der Sonne zu, gab sich ihr mit offenen Armen völlig hin, und als sie ganz eingesonnt war, wiederholte sie, mit einem scheinheilig feierlichen Gesicht, langsam: »O Mensch!« Der Diener stand unbeweglich an der Tür, bis sie ihm sagte: »Also dann gehns hinauf und richtens dem Herrn Kammersänger aus, daß ich schon wieder ¿o Mensch¿ Hab sagen müssen, und wenn er jetzt nicht gleich kommt, fang ich allein zu essen an, es ist dreiviertel zwei!« Sie sah dem Diener nach und mußte lachen. Vor fünf Jahren war der noch Brauknecht in Henndorf. Das verstand ihr Bruder wirklich, Menschen herzurichten! Nur sich selber nicht. Er hätte so gern dem König Eduard ähnlich gesehen. Es gelang ihm aber nur bei den Dienern. Sie sah durchs Zimmer, ordnete die Körbe mit den Blumen und trat an den gedeckten Tisch. Wenn der Herr Kammersänger Ignaz Fiechl von den Ferien kam, war er noch strenger. Er zog mit der Ledernen seinen ganzen Übermut aus und mit den weißen Handschuhen alle seine Launen wieder an.

Erst als der Zug endlich fuhr, atmete Franz auf, entkommen. Die dumme Furcht! Wer soll ihm denn nachsetzen? Sie freut sich, ihn los zu sein. Und alle werden sich freuen. Und ihn auslachen. Entkommen, wieder einmal! Und wieder einmal nur fort, möglichst weit fort, am liebsten aus der Welt fort! Einschlafen und nie mehr aufwachen! Und er wird aber ja doch wieder aufwachen, auch diesmal, und wieder ein neues Leben anfangen, sein Leben bestand ja darin, immer wieder ein neues Leben anzufangen. Wie lange noch? Er wurde jetzt schon grau. In dem ruhig rollenden Zug schlief er wirklich halb ein. Er war entkommen, er war geborgen; er wird vergessen. Und dann wird dies alles bei den anderen Erinnerungen liegen. Und wenn er später wieder einmal daran denkt, wird er lachen, wie er über die anderen Erinnerungen lacht. Er wird aber nicht oft daran denken, denn es wird ja dann wieder irgend etwas sein, dem er wieder entkommen muß, um sich wieder zu bergen und es wieder zu vergessen. Denn sich selber wird er ja niemals entkommen. Dazu hat er sich zu lieb. Er sieht ein, daß er sich selber ändern müßte. Er versucht es ja auch immer wieder, sein Leben bestand bisher aus lauter solchen Versuchen. Und dieser, dem er eben entfloh, wird auch noch nicht der letzte gewesen sein. Früher hat er sich in solchen Augenblicken immer gesagt: Jeder muß Lehrgeld zahlen, aber bis du nur erst älter sein wirst! Nun machte das Lehrgeld schon eine ganz schöne Summe, der Wunsch aber, älter zu werden, mäßigte sich, er hatte darauf auch kein rechtes Vertrauen mehr. Vielleicht war es überhaupt klüger, sich nichts zu wünschen.

Der neue Bezirkshauptmann hielt in der Türe noch einmal, sah forschend auf den alten Amtsdiener zurück und sagte: »Ja, daß ich nicht vergess'! Sagen's einmal! Können Sie ein Radl putzen?« Der Amtsdiener antwortete gekränkt: »Aber Herr Baron! Die Herren haben doch ein jeder ein Radl. Wär' net übel!« »Also da kommen's dann zu mir, heute noch, Kreuzgasse vier ¿« »Ich weiß«, bestätigte der Diener. »Ich weiß, Herr Baron.« »Holen's das Radl, richten Sie's ordentlich her und stellen Sie's hier ein. Verstanden?« »Jawohl, Herr Baron«, sagte der Diener. Der Bezirkshauptmann trat auf ihn zu, tippte mit dem Finger auf seinen Kragen und blies ihm den Staub weg. Und er sagte: »Und dann noch etwas! Hören Sie zu! Wie haben Sie gesagt, daß Ihr Name ist?« Der Amtsdiener meldete: »Pfandl, Herr Baron! Johann Pfandl.« Der Bezirkshauptmann sagte: »Also, mein lieber Pfandl, merken Sie sich, daß ich hier kein Herr Baron bin, sondern der Herr Bezirkshauptmann. Im Amt gibt's keinen Baron und keinen Grafen, das könnten's schon wissen. Verstanden?« »Jawohl, Herr Bezirkshauptmann!« sagte der Diener. »Ich habe nur gemeint, weil ¿« »Meinen's nix, verehrter Herr Pfandl«, sagte der Baron. »Das müssen Sie sich bei mir abgewöhnen. Meinen's nix, sondern tun's, was man Ihnen sagt. Dann werden wir ganz gute Freunde sein, lieber Pfandl. Verstanden?« »Jawohl, Herr Bezirkshauptmann«, sagte Pfandl.
