Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, poet, playwright, translator and popularizer of Russian literature in the West. His first major publication, a short story collection entitled A Sportsman's Sketches (1852), was a milestone of Russian realism, and his novel Fathers and Sons (1862) is regarded as one of the major works of 19th-century fiction. Turgenev was impressed with German Central-European society, and believed that Russia could best improve itself by imitating the West. He first made his name with A Sportsman's Sketches, also known as Sketches From a Hunter's Album; or, Notes of a Hunter. He wrote several short novels like The Diary of a Superfluous Man, Faust, and The Lull. In them Turgenev expressed the anxieties and hopes of Russians of his generation.

Home of the Gentry, also translated as A Nest of the Gentlefolk and A Nest of the Gentry, is a novel by Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) published in the January 1859 issue of Sovremennik. It was enthusiastically received by the Russian society and remained his least controversial and most widely read novel until the end of the 19th century. Turgenev wrote the novel shortly after his 40th birthday, and it expresses some of his feelings about middle age, as its protagonist is forced to confront the mistakes of his past and determine what options are left for his dwindling future.

Arguably the finest novel by Ivan Turgenev, Fathers and Children tells a compelling story of generational conflict.Published in the 1860s, this novel alludes to the changing social climate of 19th century Russia - old-style liberals, widely represented in the elder generation would clash with the bold nihilists, many of whom were young. Characters from the former group are represented with marked humbleness and nostalgia, while those of the latter group are inclined to pointed declarations espousing the avant-garde philosophy of the time. Old institutions such as the Russian Orthodox church are openly challenged by characters in the text, while the young nihilists Bazarov and Arkady grapple with their affections for Madame Odintsova, an elegant, cultured and financially independent woman.

The first work by Ivan Turgenev to attain wide attention, A Sportsman's Sketches is a collection of short stories mostly set amid Russia's rural population of serfs and peasants.Written by Turgenev in response to the stark poverty and injustices he witnessed in Russia, the stories here depict various encounters with peasants, while the narrator himself remains unseen. Each different tale illustrates a different injustice, with characters often ordinary peasants scraping a living off the land. Others, such as the dwarf Kasyan, combine a love of folklore with a distaste for the society they live and work within. Some peasants are kindly and popular, while others are thrifty and wise - in spite of their shared circumstances, Turgenev paints a picture of a countryside which contained both arable beauty and social neglect. Although some of Turgenev's stories are short anecdotes which state a simple point before concluding, others colourfully expound upon their subjects and environment.
