Der katholische Theologe und Philosoph Jakob Frohschammer (1821 - 1893) kämpfte in einer Reihe von Schriften gegen die kirchliche Autorität und das Unfehlbarkeitsdogma der katholischen Kirche und wandte sich auch gegen eine materialistisch ausgerichtete Philosophie. Zeugnis hierfür legt auch das hier vorliegende Werk ab, mit dem der Versuch gemacht wird, "die Phantasie, in ihrer objektiven und subjektiven Bedeutung, nun auch als Grundprinzip der geschichtlichen Entwicklung der Menschheit zu erkennen und darzustellen, ... als Grundprinzip des Weltprozesses resp. des Naturprozesses und der Genesis der Menschen-Natur sowie der Betätigung des subjektiven menschlichen Geistes ..."
