For many years it was the rule on most railroads that trains which were not on the regular schedule were, for safety reasons, identified with white flags flown from the front of the locomotive. Over the years there were many thousands (tens of thousands) of these "extras" including chartered trains, private trains and specials. This book reviews and describes some of the more interesting ones beginning with the iconic circus trains and including political trains, funeral trains, advertising trains, Christmas trains, event celebration trains, military and wartime trains, royal trains, and much more. Loaded with more than two hundred illustrations, the book includes a detailed index and an extensive bibliography.

An innocent prank has serious consequences for twelve-year-old Ben who wants to show his cowboy father and the surly cow boss that he's ready to take more responsibility. Roping a ground squirrel was not the way to do it. Caught in the midst of their conflict, Ben comes to terms with his life. Ben is impatient to grow up and fill the footprints his father leaves on the Nevada cattle ranch where he works as the 'top hand.' Meeting the high expectations of his father is difficult enough, without the enmity expressed by Fred, the old cow boss, who seems to hate him. His Great Idea of roping a ground squirrel takes a disastrous turn that results in big trouble for him and good-natured teasing from all the cowboys in the bunkhouse. Hoping to help Ben get back into the good graces of both his father and Fred, these working 'buckaroos' teach him some old-time western skills that will help him take responsibility for the trouble he has caused. Ben grows up very quickly when he's put in a position where only he can save Fred's life, earning the respect he craves from everyone on the ranch. This book accurately portrays an American subculture: ranch life in the Great Basin of the United States. Here, cowboy culture and practices reflect the strong influence of the Spanish vaquero traditions of the Old West. Customs and terms specific to this area and still in use today are defined in a glossary in the back of the book. The Orange Slipknot was a finalist for Foreword Magazine's 2007 Book of the Year Award and Bronze Medal Winner of the MoonBeam Award in 2008. World War II was filled to overflowing with people with strong and unique personalities: Churchill, Stalin, Mussolini, Roosevelt, Hitler and many more. Thousands of books record the war and the history, actions and consequences of the main players, who have all been exhaustively examined and biographed in great detail. One of the most interesting was Hermann Goering, Hitler's number two man in the Nazi Empire, the Nazi's economic czar, and the head of the famous Luftwaffe air force. Literally scores of books have been written about Goering and the study of him can occupy years but this book summarizes the most important of them and draws conclusions about his place in history.

Many small volunteer and non-profit organizations have their own sources of funds, but do not have the resources to employ professional accountants to keep the books. Usually a volunteer steps in and agrees to do the work. Commonly, the organization's treasurer takes custody of its funds, assures that they are securely and profitably invested, manages inflows and expenses, deals with and manages obligations to the government, and prepares reports. The organization expects integrity, precision, consistency and reliability in return and judges the treasurer's performance accordingly. Becoming a volunteer treasurer can involve a significant learning curve. Jan Young spent thirty years as treasurer for a small church and experienced it in full. His book is intended to help both the new and the experienced volunteer treasurer by presenting a primer on the required methods and procedures and by including a number of valuable recommendations on taxes, budgets, audits and more.

The United States Constitution is the most important document ever created in the USA and one of the half-dozen or so most important ever written by humankind. Almost all of us know that the Constitution exists. And almost all of us know a few of its key provisions. But few of us have a detailed understand and fewer still have actually read it. The Constitution is not difficult. The original document is only four pages long and is generally clear and easily understood. But with the amendments, reading it becomes more time-consuming. This book contains a brief history and description of the US Constitution and its Amendments, starting with the original document and proceeding through the Amendments, one at a time, all in chronological order. It includes un-ratified amendments and some that have been proposed but have not been approved by Congress. A discussion of the highlights of some State Constitutions is included. Technical terms are explained and a full index is provided.
