In this study of the press during the French Revolutionary crisis of the early 1830s, Jeremy Popkin shows that newspapers played a crucial role in defining a new repertoire of identities - for workers, women and members of the middle classes - that redefined Europe's public spheres.

The dramatic events that led to the abolition of slavery in the French Caribbean colony of Saint-Domingue in 1793 and in revolutionary France in 1794, and also to the destruction of Cap Francais, the richest city in the French Caribbean, and to the first refugee crisis in the United States.
