A well-known New Zealand novelist linked with the modernist movement in literature, Katherine Mansfield, compiled a number of short tales under the title "The Garden Party and Other Stories." There are 15 tales in the book, 15 different subjects are covered, including class, gender, and the human condition. The collection's most well-known stories include "The Garden Party," which centers on a wealthy family planning a garden party while an impoverished family nearby suffers tragedy, "Miss Brill," which explores the inner thoughts of a lonesome woman who frequently visits a public park, and "The Daughters of the Late Colonel," which tells the tale of two sisters who are coping with their father's death and the difficulties in their own lives.
