Kurd Laßwitz (1848-1910) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller. Er publizierte auch unter dem Pseudonym L. Velatus und gilt als Begründer der deutschsprachigen Science Fiction. Laßwitz gilt als einer der Väter der modernen Science Fiction. Er schrieb außerdem Bücher über Physik, Erkenntnistheorie sowie Immanuel Kant und bearbeitete auch eine kritische Ausgabe von Gustav Theodor Fechner (Begründer der Psychophysik). Anders als Jules Verne und stärker als Herbert George Wells verwendete Kurd Laßwitz die SF vor allem für belehrende und kritisierende Zwecke. Seine Zukunftsentwürfe sind mutiger als die Werke seiner beiden Kollegen und Zeitgenossen, weil sie weiter in die Zukunft reichen. Sein Roman Auf zwei Planeten (1897) mit seinen über tausend Seiten gehört zu den wichtigsten deutschen Science-Fiction-Romanen, der auch in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt wurde und mehrmals neu aufgelegt wurde. Zwischen Erde und Mars Auf einer Expedition zum Nordpol entdecken deutsche Forscher die geheime Station einer außerirdischen und hochentwickelten Zivilisation. Es sind die Nume, wie sich die Bewohner des Mars nennen. Sie nutzen diese Station, um die Erde zu erforschen. Der Ballon der Wissenschaftler verunglückt. Zwei Männer werden von den Nume gerettet, einer bleibt vermisst. Die beiden Geretteten erfahren die Gastfreundschaft der Marsianer auf deren Station, einer der Forscher darf sogar einige Zeit später zum Mars reisen. Während seines Aufenthaltes auf dem Mars trifft auf der Erde, die von den Nume "Ba" genannt wird, ein Luftschiff der Nume auf ein englisches Kriegsschiff und wird angegriffen. Jetzt spitzt sich die Lage zu.
