El tío Henry y la tía Em tenían una cama grande situada en un rincón, y Dorothy ocupaba una pequeñita en otro rincón. No había altillo ni tampoco sótano, salvo un hueco cavado en el piso, y al que llamaban refugio para ciclones, donde la familia podía cobijarse en caso de que se descargara un huracán lo bastante fuerte como para barrer con cualquier edificio que hallara en su camino. A este hueco ¿pequeño y oscurö se llegaba por medio de una escalera y una puerta trampa que había en medio del piso. Cuando Dorothy se detenía en el vano de la puerta y miraba a su alrededor, no podía ver otra cosa que la gran pradera que los rodeaba. Ni un árbol ni una casa se destacaba en la inmensa llanura que se extendía en todas direcciones hasta parecer juntarse con el cielo. El sol había calcinado la tierra arada hasta convertirla en una masa grisácea con una que otra rajadura aquí y allá. Ni siquiera la hierba era verde, pues el sol había quemado la parte superior de sus largas hojillas hasta teñirlas del mismo gris predominante en el lugar. En un tiempo la casa estuvo pintada, pero el calor del astro rey había levantado ampollas en la pintura y las lluvias se llevaron a ésta, de modo que la vivienda tenía ahora la misma tonalidad grisácea y opaca que todo lo que la circundaba.
