Die nachfolgende Ausführung soll in keiner Weise eine Schilderung irgendwelcher Kulturen, sie soll vielmehr ein Versuch sein, den Leser sich in das Seelenhafte oder, wie ich es mit dem Hauptbegriff dieses Buches nenne, das Paideuma des Wesens der Kultur einleben, einfühlen zu lassen. Alles Folgende ist kein: ¿Es ist so", sondern ein: ¿So ist es verständlich". Mit der modernen Psychologie oder gar Physiologie hat sie nichts zu tun; sie geht ihren eigenen Weg, muß diesen gehen, um das Gröbste, oft anscheinend Unüberwindliche aus dem Wege räumen zu können. Es ist eine anspruchslose, der ¿Wissenschaft" in gewissem Sinne fernstehende Arbeit. Ihre Vereinsamung kommt auch in der Sprache, die dem Gegenstande entsprechend oft nicht leicht sein kann, und in der Verwendung eigener Bezeichnungen zum Ausdruck. Vor allem sah ich mich gezwungen das Wort Kultur in einem speziellen Sinn und für ein spezielles Bedeutungsgebiet durch das eben genannte Wort ¿Paideuma" zu ersetzen. Der Innenaufbau geht aus vom Erlebten und sucht von da aus zum Verständnis zu führen. Leo Frobenius (1873-1938) war ein deutscher Ethnologe. Von 1904 bis 1935 unternahm er verschiedene Forschungsexpeditionen nach Afrika (Deutsche Inner-Afrikanische Forschungsexpedition), insbesondere nach Togo, Tunesien, Sambia sowie in den Sudan und den Kongo. Frobenius veröffentlichte zahlreiche Werke, darunter auch eine umfangreiche Sammlung von afrikanischen Volkserzählungen. Frobenius sah die afrikanische Kultur der europäischen als gleichwertig an, was für einen Gelehrten seiner Zeit ungewöhnlich war.
