This book is correctly regarded as one of Trotsky's finest classics. It is a product of a sharp polemic within the American trotskyist movement during the period 1939-40. This was a dispute which touched on the very fundamentals of Marxism. It was for this reason that Trotsky himself participated in this struggle in the form of a series of articles and letters that are brought together in this volume. The issues covered concern the essence of Marxist theory and deal with such questions as: The class nature of the Soviet state. The defence of the Soviet Union against imperialist attack. Bolshevik principles of organisation. Dialectical Materialism. This book is Trotsky at his best: profound, concise and theorectically razor sharp.

Lev Davidovich Bronstein (Leon Trotsky)1879 - 1940.Russian revolutionary, political theorist and politician. The book was first published in 1930 and was written in the first year of Trotsky's exile in Turkey. It covers the time from his youth, through the Revolution of 1905, the Revolution of 1917, the Russian Civil War up to his struggle against Stalinism and eventual expulsion from the Communist Party.

The Revolution Betrayed is one of the most important Marxist texts of all time. It is the only serious Marxist analysis of what happened to the Russian Revolution after the death of Lenin. In this book, Trotsky provided a brilliant and profound analysis of Stalinism, which has never been improved upon, let alone superseded. With a delay of 60 years, it was completely vindicated by history. Without a thorough knowledge of this work, it is impossible to understand the reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union and the events since then in Russia and on a world scale. This remarkable work predicted the fate of the USSR down to the last detail. In the period of so-called market reform, Russia experienced the biggest collapse in world economic history. Just in the first five years alone, the economy contracted by a staggering sixty percent. Such a drop is unprecedented in economic history. It was like a catastrophic defeat in war. The collapse of the USSR has led to social disintegration. The elements of barbarism have all reappeared. Poverty, beggary, drunkenness, drug addiction, prostitution, crime, epidemics have spread to an unparalleled degree. Sections of the youth are affected by lumpenisation. At the same time, the mafia capitalists have accrued massive wealth by plundering the former nationalised industries as well as the rich sources of oil and other resources. The bureaucratic degeneration of the Soviet Union and its eventual fall must be carefully studied, if we are to be able to answer the questions of the workers and youth. And the best explanation that can be found is in the pages of this wonderful classic of Marxism. Only the restoration of a nationalised planned economy can create the conditions for a revival of Russia's colossal productive potential. But this cannot mean a return to the old Stalinist regime. Only a regime of real workers' democracy, along the lines of October 1917, can provide Russia with a way out of the present impasse. As Trotsky points out in a most graphic and profound passage from The Revolution Betrayed, a nationalised planned economy needs democracy as the human body needs oxygen.

A Marxist revolutionary and political thinker named Leon Trotsky authored the book "Dictatorship Vs. Democracy" in 1937. Trotsky's writings and articles collected in this volume analyses the political climate in the Soviet Union, the emergence of fascism in Europe, and the conflict between democracy and autocracy. According to Trotsky, Joseph Stalin's rule over the Soviet Union resulted in its transformation into a totalitarian dictatorship. Stalin's installation of an oppressive dictatorship and betrayal of the principles of the Russian Revolution are criticized by Trotsky. He also talks on the danger of fascism and how crucial it is to protect democracy against it. The Soviet Union banned the book because it was so divisive. Stalin finally ordered Trotsky's exile and murder in 1940. "Dictatorship Vs Democracy" is nevertheless an important contribution to Marxist theory and a crucial document in the history of the Soviet Union despite its contentious character.

"Our times again are rich in memoirs, perhaps richer than ever before. It is because there is much to tell. The more dramatic and rich in change the epoch, the more intense the interest in current history. The art of landscape-painting could never have been born in the Sahara. The "crossing" of two epochs, as at present, gives rise to a desire to look back at yesterday, already far away, through the eyes of its active participants. That is the reason for the enormous growth in the literature of reminiscence since the days of the last war. Perhaps it will justify the present volume as well.""The very fact of its coming into the world is due to the pause in the author's active political life. One of the unforeseen, though not accidental, stops in my life has proved to be Constantinople. Here I am camping - but not for the first time - and patiently waiting for what is to follow. The life of a revolutionary would be quite impossible without a certain amount of "fatalism." In one way or another, the Constantinople interval has proved the most appropriate moment for me to look back before circumstances allow me to move forward."

Trotsky's theory of the permanent revolution is one of the most important additions to Marxism. In 1904 he alone put forward that the Russian workers could come to power before the workers of the West, a theory confirmed by October 1917.

Trotski schreef 'Mijn Leven' in politieke ballingschap.

This record by Trotsky is of the events in Russia from the October Revolution of 1917 in Petrograd, to his Signing of the Brest-Litovsk deal with Germany on 3rd March 1918 that removed Russia from World War I. The treaty demanded heavy losses for Russia with regard to the annexation of land and financial indemnities to Germany. In this extended essay, Trotsky contends the reasons why he chose to sign what appears to be a disastrous agreement for Russia.Had the revolution developed more typically - - that is, under serene conditions, as it had in 1912 - - the working class would constantly have stood firm on a predominant situation, while the worker masses would progressively have been taken close behind by the low class and brought into the whirlpool of the unrest. In any case, the conflict delivered a by and large unique progression of occasions. In this book, Trotzky (until close to the end) involves the Russian Calendar in showing dates, which, as the reader will recall, is 13 days behind the Gregorian Calendar, presently introduced in Russia.
