This work draws together the voices of some 50 women working in the theatres of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. It seeks to ask and discuss questions such as: "What is feminism?" and "Does gender matter in the theatre?".

This aim of this text is to explore the concept of the literary canon and the process by which works achieve a high cultural status. It seeks to do this by analyzing three of Shakespeare's major works and comparing them with one by the less renowned Aphra Behn.

Part one of a three texts compiled during the years of change in South Africa, charts the impact of Apartheid and the cultural boycott on performance, and examining the role of women in theatre. Part one contains interviews with key theatre practitioners.

A major evaluation of the forms feminism has taken in the theatre since 1968. Lizbeth Goodman provides an analysis of the development of feminist theatre in different cultures and on several continents.
