El licenciado Vidriera es uno de los relatos de las Novelas ejemplares. En él Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra expone con aire melancólico las fantasías de un hombre que cree que su cuerpo es de cristal. Al inicio de la obra dos jóvenes caballeros encuentran a Tomás Rodaja, un niño de once años que va a Salamanca para estudiar allí. Tomás está dispuesto a servir a un amo si este le proporciona, a cambio, medios para llegar a la Universidad. Los caballeros lo toman como sirviente y con el tiempo se convierte en buen compañero de ellos.Tomás se gradúa en leyes en la ciudad de Salamanca. Allí despierta el amor de una dama que, al no ser correspondida, recurre a la magia de una morisca. Esta última le da a Tomás una poción para que no pueda vivir sin el amor de la dama. El hechizo le provoca a Tomás la locura de creerse de vidrio. Transformado en El licenciado Vidriera, no deja que nadie se le acerque por temor a romperse como un cristal y reclama a la gente que le haga preguntas que siempre sabe responder con soltura. Tomás es en este punto del relato una premonición del Quijote. Su delirio le confiere una sabiduría y un influjo peculiar sobre la gente, que solo pierde al recuperar la cordura.

Los gobernadores, Alí Bajá y Hazán Bajá, pagan la suma que el mercader judío pide por Leonisa y se luego enfrentan entre sí. Para aplacar sus ánimos el cadí decide enviar a Leonisa a Constantinopla, como regalo para el Gran Turco. Mientras, ella queda en su casa.Mahamut, un italiano amigo de Ricardo, convertido al Islam, hace que su amo el cadí compre también a Ricardo y lo lleve a su casa. Así se reencuentran Leonisa y Ricardo.El cadí decide emprender el viaje a Constantinopla con la intención secreta de quedarse con Leonisa; le mentirá al Gran Turco diciendo que ella ha muerto durante el viaje.Al final de El amante liberal, los gobernadores salen en sus galeotas a buscar al cadí, al que atacan. Aprovechando el combate, Ricardo, Mahamut y otros cristianos logran recobrar la libertad y marchan a Trápana. Allí, Leonisa, le declara su amor a Ricardo.El mismísimo Cervantes fue presa por piratas berberiscos y durante cinco años sufrió un duro cautiverio en Argel. Campuzano, el personaje principal de El coloquio de los perros. Ignora que su amada doña Estefanía, le ha contagiado una enfermedad venérea de graves efectos físicos y psicológicos. Durante su estancia en el hospital será cuando escuche los coloquios de los perros, que por inverosímiles, causarán gran impresión en la vida del personaje. No dejará de escribirlos, maravillándose de lo sabio de los diálogos, propios de eruditos más que de animales. Confiesa sus imaginaciones a su amigo el licenciado Peralta. Este, sin dejar de mostrarnos su jocosidad ante tal asunto, accede a leer el coloquio con la condición de que Campuzano deje de intentar convencerle de lo verídico del caso. El protagonista, está convencido de que su vida ha sido una vida de perros. Se identificará metafóricamente con el perro Berganza, que será escuchado por el perro Cipión, su amigo Peralta. La metáfora de este relato está en la representación del perro como animal fiel y leal. Así es la actitud de Campuzano para con la vida, recompensada con ingratitud y a veces con crueldad. En El coloquio de los perros Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra llega a cuestionar si existe diferencia entre la irracionalidad animal y la racionalidad humana.
