Ist das Christentum dadurch entstanden, daß die zweite Person der Gottheit vom Himmel auf die Erde herabgestiegen, im Leibe einer jüdischen Jungfrau Mensch geworden, nach dem Tod am Kreuz wieder leibhaftig auferstanden und zum Himmel gefahren ist: so ist der Ursprung des Christentums ein vollkommenes Wunder, das sich aller geschichtlichen Erklärung entzieht. Denn eine Erscheinung geschichtlich verstehen heißt: sie aus ihrem ursächlichen Zusammenhang mit den Zuständen an einem bestimmten Ort und zu einer bestimmten Zeit des menschlichen Lebens begreifen. Der Hereintritt eines übermenschlichen Wesens in die Erdenwelt wäre ein absoluter Neuanfang, der in gar keinem ursächlichen Zusammenhang mit dem Vorangehenden stände, also auch nach keiner Analogie der sonstigen menschlichen Erfahrung sich begreifen ließe, kurz aller geschichtlichen Erklärung sich entzöge. Ein derartiger Ursprung des Christentums könnte also nur Gegenstand des Glaubens, nicht des geschichtlichen Wissens sein."
